Thus, speech arises, and mind arises. The Blessed One said that the arising of all things is well distinguished and shown by the differences of body, etc., but not by their own nature. As such, by the differences of body, etc., meaning by the differences of body, speech, and mind, it is shown not by their own nature. Is it because the nature of all these arisings is manifested and arises through body, speech, and mind? Or is it merely by the meaning of arising through body, speech, and mind alone? Both are the nature of the mind, and it is also the meaning of manifestly arising existence. Or is it that the nature of breath moving in and out, and conceptualization, as well as examination and sensation, the nature of the mind, etc., is by the meaning of arising from the combination of body, speech, and mind? Or is it that the nature of the life force is by the meaning of manifestly arising from the actions of body, speech, and mind? If such things exist, why is the nature not shown? It depends on the differences of the disciples who are presently abiding closely, and without the explanation of nature, they can also understand the nature of the arising of body, etc., or because they have already understood the nature of the arising of body, etc., from other sutras. It is also shown in consideration of future disciples, because by the power of other sutras, they can also understand its nature. How is it so? It is shown here that in other sutras it is also said: Breath moving in and out is the arising of the body. Those who speak extensively in this way are called monks who have desires. Arising, arising, what is arising? Householder, arising is these three: the arising of the body, the arising of speech, and the arising of mind. Monk who has desires, what is between the arising of the body and the arising of the mind? Householder, breath moving in and out is called the arising of the body. Conceptualization and examination are called the arising of speech. Sensation and mind are called the arising of the mind. Monk, why is breath moving in and out the arising of the body?

Beginning with "called," are consciousness and mind the activity of mind (Sanskrit Devanagari: manaskāra, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: manaskara, Tibetan: ཡིད་ཀྱི་འདུ་བྱེད་, Chinese literal meaning: mental fabrication)? Answer: Layman, the in-and-out breathing is a dharma belonging to the body, following the body, dwelling in the body, connected to the body, and arising from the body. Therefore, the in-and-out breathing is called the activity of the body (Sanskrit Devanagari: kāyasaṃskāra, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: kayasamskara, Tibetan: ལུས་ཀྱི་འདུ་བྱེད་, Chinese literal meaning: bodily fabrication). Thus, here, it is established as called the activity of the body by the meaning of the body's manifest fabrication. Some say that it is called the activity of the body because it fabricates the body, and the body is connected to the in-and-out breathing, which is the cause of arising. After investigation, verbal expression without investigation is not possible. Therefore, discrimination and examination are called the activity of speech (Sanskrit Devanagari: vaksaṃskāra, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: vaksaṃskara, Tibetan: ངག་གི་འདུ་བྱེད་, Chinese literal meaning: verbal fabrication), which is to show the meaning of speech's manifest fabrication. Consciousness and mind are also dharmas arising from the mind, dwelling in the mind, relying on the mind, connected to the mind, and arising from the mind. Therefore, consciousness and mind are the activity of mind. In this sutra, by the meaning of the mind's manifest fabrication, it is the activity of mind. Or, because the mind manifests fabrication, it is called the activity of mind. What makes the body move is the activity of the body. What makes speech universally arise is the activity of speech. The activity that is in accordance with the mind is called the activity of mind. Should these be viewed as they are here? No. The "here" refers to this Sutra of Dependent Arising. The "as they are" refers to the in-and-out breathing and so on. It is said: Regarding the differences in the actions of body, speech, and mind, here it is considered that body and so on are activities, which means that all three activities are in the sense of manifestly fabricating rebirth, not in the sense of the body and so on manifestly fabricating, nor in the sense of manifestly fabricating. Precisely for this reason, the differences in actions are mentioned. By mentioning action, other activities that are the cause of rebirth are excluded. By mentioning differences, the unpolluted, the unspecified, and the causes of the exhaustion of defilements are excluded.
