The way of discerning the aspect of being able to obstruct is taught by the term "darkness." The way of discerning the aspect of perversion is taught by three terms: doubt, lack of wisdom, and afflictions of bad wisdom, being in accordance with these. The way of discerning the division of unfavorable aspects is taught by three terms of unfavorable aspects of wisdom arising from listening, contemplating, and meditating, namely, not knowing, not seeing, and not realizing. The way of discerning the nature is taught by another three divisions of those very unfavorable aspects becoming small, medium, and large, namely, ignorance, lack of knowledge, and the aspect of darkness. The way of discerning the function is taught by not knowing the past limits, etc., being in accordance with self-grasping, and being an obstacle to liberation from it, which should be understood by two reasons. As it is said, ignorance is the agent of giving support that enters into all aspects, and the agent of obstructing that turns away from all aspects. The division of ignorance is complete. What is the action called "action conditioned by ignorance"? The word "action" is also seen in all conditioned phenomena, saying, "All actions are impermanent." It is also seen in one aspect of it, such as the aggregate of action. It is also seen in thought, such as, "What is the aggregate of taking action? It is the six groups of thought." It is also seen in one aspect of the aggregate of form, such as the two breaths of exhaling and inhaling. It is also seen in both discrimination and investigation. It is also seen in perception and thought, saying, "Perception and thought are action." It is also seen in the life faculty, saying, "The action of life is the action of life." Therefore, if the object is not distinguished, what is meant here by "action conditioned by ignorance"? Therefore, in order to distinguish the object, the Blessed One said, "There are three kinds of action: the action of the body."
