If non-merit exists, then merit does not exist. If someone denies that non-merit also exists, then this ignorance is equivalent to wrong view. If someone perceives merit as non-merit, then this ignorance is equivalent to holding to precepts and asceticism, and is also equivalent to wrong view. Why is that? If one thinks that merit leads to undesirable results, then this is holding to precepts and asceticism. If one thinks that merit does not lead to desirable results at all, then this is equivalent to wrong view. How does one perceive merit as non-merit? Therefore, it is said in the sutra, "killing animals and burning," etc., because they perceive killing animals and burning, etc., as merit. Therefore, in order to avoid this, that is, perceiving merit as merit, and also perceiving non-merit as merit, then this ignorance is also equivalent to holding to precepts and asceticism, and is ignorance corresponding to wrong view. If one thinks of non-merit as one thinks of merit, which is the cause of desirable results, then this is equivalent to holding to precepts and asceticism. If one thinks of non-merit as not leading to undesirable results like merit, then this is equivalent to wrong view. Denying the inversion of cause and effect, or saying that the view is also wrong view, therefore this also shows that it corresponds to wrong view. The "not understanding the ripening" that is elaborated in the sutra also shows that it corresponds to doubt and wrong view. The "regarding non-ripening" that is elaborated in the sutra also shows that this is the ignorance of the naked ascetics corresponding to wrong view.

Because of slandering the cause as the producer, it is said that all of those are caused by previously done causes. Looking at cause and effect in a reversed way is also a wrong view. Understanding maturation as not maturation, this which is explained in detail also possesses the same wrong view, because of slandering maturation and cause. Those who say that the gods are self-born, it is because they view cause and effect in a reversed way. Because they understand the body of the gods, which is maturation, as not being maturation. In that which is explained in detail as "not knowing both," "both" refers to action and maturation. The ignorance of those who understand Ishvara etc. as the creators of beings is shown to be the same ignorance as holding discipline and asceticism as supreme, because they view what is not a cause as a cause. Although this is ignorance of only one, it is shown to be ignorance of both, because this is also deluded about maturation, because they conceive its cause as something else. Those who speak of no cause are also like that, meaning those who say that there is no cause, it is also shown to be the same ignorance as the wrong view of not knowing both, because whatever slanders the cause, that is not knowing that the cause of maturation is previous, so it is shown to be not knowing both. In that which is explained in detail as "not knowing the Buddha etc.," "not comprehending" shows that it is unmixed ignorance. "Doubting" means that it is the same as doubting. "Wrong view" means that it is the same as wrong view. Similarly, for suffering etc., if one hears the characteristics of suffering etc., then the characteristics of the truth of suffering are impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. The characteristics of the origin are origin, cause, arising, and condition. The characteristics of cessation are cessation, peace, excellence, and certainty.

It is the nature of arising. The nature of the path is the path, wisdom, practice, and the nature of definite liberation. As before, if someone says they do not understand, doubt, or slander, what is that? "Causes and phenomena that arise truly from causes," broadly speaking, the twelve links of dependent origination that are causes and effects, from ignorance and so on up to old age and death, these are causes in relation to the later links, and effects in relation to the earlier links. To this, one should also say they do not understand, doubt, or slander. The aspects of enlightenment together with the unfavorable aspects, together with the causes, regarding that, the aspects of enlightenment, those together with the unfavorable aspects, together with the causes, what is shown, the aspects of enlightenment are mindfulness and right exertion and the bases of miraculous power and the faculties and the powers and the branches of enlightenment and the path. Its unfavorable aspects are ignorance and laziness and distraction and lack of faith and loss of mindfulness and non-awareness and what is to be abandoned by seeing and the subtle defilements to be abandoned by meditation, and so on. The causes of the phenomena of the aspects of enlightenment are relying on a noble person and listening to the true Dharma and proper attention and habituation in previous lives. Among these, relying on a noble person and listening to the true Dharma are the power of external conditions. Proper attention is the power of internal conditions. Habituation in previous lives is the power of cause and condition. The causes of its unfavorable aspects are relying on a non-noble person and listening to non-Dharma and improper attention and non-habituation in previous lives. Among these, relying on a non-noble person is the dominant condition. Listening to non-Dharma is the objective condition. Improper attention is the immediate condition. Non-habituation in previous lives is the causal condition, not understanding these, just as it is said, not understanding.
