\\. Drowsiness, sleep, and doubt. The third chapter. The so-called three chapters refer to desire, hatred, and ignorance. The one who is attached does not know the Dharma. As it is extensively stated, the angry one and the ignorant one also do not know the Dharma. Contact is also shown as a common cause, meaning that it is also included in the aggregate of formations by being the cause of the aggregate of formations. When ignorance arises, all outflows arise, because ignorance belongs to the outflows, so it is shown that when ignorance arises, all outflows arise. Ignorance arises only by relying on ignorance, which is the teacher (Sanskrit: ācārya) expressing his own thoughts. Because it arises only from ignorance, it means that improper attention, obscurations, wrong views, and desires, etc., arise, which is a summary statement. Improper attention, etc., do not arise without ignorance. Therefore, it does not arise from improper attention, etc. If that is the case, how should the previously mentioned sutras be understood? Therefore, when one's own kind arises from each other, improper attention, etc., cause it to grow even more, so it is said. Therefore, the seed grows because it is even more difficult to abandon, so it is said. In whatever way improper attention, obscurations, wrong views, and desires, etc., universally arise, the seed of ignorance will fully grow. When it is fully grown, it is very difficult to abandon, and thus it will cause it to grow even more. Alternatively, when improper attention, etc., universally arise, they hinder the universal arising of the antidote to ignorance, and the seed of ignorance without an antidote will grow very much. In whatever way it grows, it is also increasingly difficult to abandon, therefore it is said that the seed grows because it is even more difficult to abandon. In that case, that is also its.

Saying "it is a cause" is synonymous with things like improper attention. So, what is said in this Sutra Pitaka is explained as follows. Furthermore, saying "others must be spoken of" means showing that there is no end. So, why is that cause not mentioned in this Sutra Pitaka? In order to prevent this objection, from where is it shown? Is it to begin showing the order of birth, or is there no showing of the order of birth? Saying "for what purpose are the twelve limbs shown" is to explain. Why? Because what is it that draws, for what, from what does it arise, and what are the faults of that, etc., these are the showing of the twelve limbs, so there is no need to show the cause of ignorance for that, because the twelve limbs alone have already shown that meaning. That is also to be shown later, meaning that it is shown according to need. Saying "the cause of ignorance is its own kind" means that the knowledge of ignorance is a cause, as it is said, only relying on ignorance, ignorance arises, this is extensively spoken. Here, it is not intended to say that the cause of each limb is its own kind, so what is it? It is shown that the cause is of a different kind. If it is not like that, then name and form must also be said to be the cause of name and form, and the six sense sources must also be said to be the cause of the six sense sources. Saying "cyclic existence will have a beginning" is because there are no other limbs before ignorance. Saying "limbs will increase" is the thought if ignorance has a cause. Saying "those will have no end" refers to those limbs. If it is not like that, because the cause of what it is is not mentioned, the fault that "cyclic existence will have a beginning" will remain. The answer is that improper attention is the cause of ignorance, which appears in other Sutra Pitakas, and has already been shown before, which shows that cyclic existence has no beginning. Limbs will also not increase, because that is included in grasping.

If it is said that what is it to improperly attend to "it is so"? It should be added that "it is not an increase of limbs." It will not be without end either, because the two act as causes for each other, like a bird and an egg. For example, from a bird an egg is produced, from an egg a bird, a bird comes from an egg, and a bird is born from an egg, because one's cause is the other, so it is not without beginning, and there is no fault of increasing limbs and no end, just like that. If one wants to know how the two are causes for each other, then therefore it is said in this way, that is, "the need to pay attention" etc. is explained in detail, just like this, the types of dharmas that have causes, have conditions, and are sure to produce, are spoken from there. Saying that "habitual attention arises from ignorance" means that the so-called "habitual" is to show the improper attention itself with words, because it is the cause of habitual afflictions. The words "arising from ignorance" show that ignorance is its cause, because arising from ignorance is "arising from ignorance." Then, if it is said that all the limbs are said to be causes from others, etc. is explained in detail, if other sutras say the cause of ignorance, then if this sutra does not say its cause, then all the limbs such as actions and consciousness, other sutras say that they are dependent origination and the dharma of dependent origination, and other sutras also say that these are causes, that is, "Monks, the increase and decrease of dharmas should also be explained," etc. is explained in detail, and "the cause of ignorance is the meritorious action manifest action, the cause of ignorance is the non-meritorious and immovable action manifest action," and "if it is the meritorious action manifest action, then this consciousness will follow the merit," etc. is explained in detail. Both craving and ignorance are also included in grasping according to the rules of Abhidharma, what does this mean? It should not be said.
