The so-called "how can it be in accordance?" means how can one know the arising of afflictions, karma, and lifespan if the three parts are not explained? It is because the causes of present or future births are explained. Regarding the statement that "the past extreme is also shown through the path of ignorance, craving, and grasping," the answer is: If craving and grasping are also shown through the path of ignorance, how can it not contradict this treatise? Because its function is due to the cause of one affliction, just as the Blessed One said, "ignorance." If craving and grasping in the past extreme are shown through the path of ignorance, why not in the middle extreme? This is said in connection with the case where craving and grasping are not shown through the path of ignorance. In the middle extreme, all afflictions arise together with ignorance. If one asks, "What does it mean by 'because the past time has become a form of darkness'?" In the past time, craving and grasping were shown through the path of ignorance, and the form of darkness is ignorance. Because the past time has become a form of darkness, craving and grasping are shown through the path of ignorance, but not in the middle. If so, then for this reason, these two should be very clearly distinguished and explained. For this reason, because it has become a form of darkness, it should be very clearly distinguished and explained in the past time, because the three distinctions of ignorance, formation, craving, and grasping are also to show that they are the entities of the cause. If one asks, "But what does it mean by 'because the present arising proves the past'?" These two do not need to be distinguished and explained. How so? Just as at the time of the present arising of birth, craving, grasping, and existence are all entities of rebirth, so it was in the past. The Abhidharmakosha also says: In short, the two, cause and effect, should be inferred from the middle. If so, then regarding the statement "for this reason, it will become unshown," the answer is: For this reason, because the present arising proves the past, it will become unshown the cause of that past.

Thus, just as future births are shown to depend on craving, grasping, and becoming, so too, it can be inferred that what occurs in the present also depends on craving, grasping, and becoming. Therefore, knowing that birth arises from actions and afflictions is what is being extensively explained. Why is it said that grasping is caused by craving in the middle stage? Because in the previous stage, both craving and grasping exist together with ignorance. It should be grasped by the word "also." Which action has created birth, that is formation; which will be created, that is not formation, what is it then? It is becoming. Which has arisen from, that is not becoming, what is it then? It is formation. Which will change from, that is becoming, what reason is there for saying this? Moreover, if it is formation because of the meaning of manifestly forming, then becoming is also the same. If it becomes becoming through it, then how is becoming not formation? However, if it is formation, then how can it not be formation and not be becoming? The past action exists, and from that arises the consciousness that connects, the answer to what is said is, if it exists by itself, how can it be past? It is not at all different from another dharma called the present. Or, it itself will become past, but its dharma will not become so. If it itself becomes its own nature, then transformation will not be established, because if it is the nature of dharma, there will be no transformation. Therefore, there is not even a little of another dharma called the past. Because it is interdependent arising, what arises from what has not arisen, and what arises from what has arisen, will also become past. Or, all existing self-nature will become past, and the future or present will not exist, because the nature of dharma will never not exist, so the future will also definitely exist. The past exists, which means where, to what, what has the ability? This means where are things real?

What kind of ability does it have? Is it for generating? Is it for straightening? Or is it for abandoning in another stage? If examined in all aspects, it is not possible. Because it also does not have the ability to generate, because the self-nature of phenomena does not arise from non-arising. It also does not have the ability to straighten, because actions do not have any function. It also does not have the ability to abandon in another stage, because the future is not called the present arising, and nothing arises from causes and conditions, nor does it have its own self. Because the self-nature of phenomena is not completely distinguished by causes and conditions, how can the past actions have self-nature, being the cause of the consciousness that connects the continuity, and in any case, there is no difference between the two stages of the present arising, these two stages being the past and the future. However, if these two stages are not different from this, then the future will also become the present arising. The past is also the same, if there is no future, then where, to whom, and what ability is there? If they are not different from this, then it is established that it arises from where it has not arisen, and after arising, it also disappears. What will happen then? Therefore, if it possesses that, why not wish to arise from where it has not arisen, and to disappear from where it has arisen? Thus it is said, why not wish the self-nature of that difference, which has differences, to arise from where it has not arisen, and to disappear after arising? In that case, the consciousness that connects the continuity here cannot be established solely by the cause of the past actions. Therefore, it must be undoubtedly admitted that the consciousness of the previous life, which is completely imbued by karma, is the consciousness that connects the continuity here. Even so, how can consciousness be established as a limb that arises like the present arising? It should be said that there are two each in the front and back, and eight in the middle. Is it merely that there is no establishment of three sections? If it is said that because dependent origination is three sections, then the teacher
