That is, consciousness with taking as its condition moistens it. That which is called 'name and form' is the four abodes of consciousness. That which is called 'here it is said to be its field' is of consciousness with taking as its condition. That which is called 'here' is in this sutra. For example, that which water relies on to moisten the seed, that is said to be the field of the seed. Among them, consciousness approaching and abiding in form is the desire realm. Approaching feeling is meditation. Approaching perception is the three formless realms. Approaching formations is the peak of existence. It is said that because of attachment to the aggregates of form, feeling, perception, and formations, consciousness abides. How can the four aggregates be the four abodes of consciousness? Not relying on the existence of karma, it is extensively explained that because of the power of the existence of karma, consciousness arises in other similar beings, therefore the sutra says that karma is the field. For example, just as the power of the land of the field can cause seeds such as rice to grow. That which is called 'what is the difference between these two' refers to the two, birth and direct realization. That which is called 'if karma and craving are the cause, then how' refers to how karma can reasonably be the cause? How can craving be the cause of direct realization? That which is extensively explained as 'in this and that class of sentient beings', that which is called 'in this and that class of sentient beings' refers to the class of sentient beings such as gods and humans. That which is called 'going to a similar share' is going to similarity. How does it go to similarity? Because it goes to a similar birth, it goes accordingly. Thus, for the time being, it is shown that in the class of sentient beings such as gods, approaching similarity is birth. Approaching in accordance with karma means that birth in this and that class of sentient beings is in the manner of a definitive word. That which is called 'its cause is karma' refers to that birth. That which is called 'because karma is various and has different ripening' is like many sprouts arising in accordance with the seed.

It occurs because there are many kinds of seeds. Therefore, whatever is in accordance with it is because it is in accordance with the seed. Thus, because karma is diverse, it is reasonable that many similar things become the cause of different births. Because it is good and non-good, karma is accompanied by ripening; therefore, it is reasonable that it is the cause of birth. Thus, it is shown that the cause of birth is karma. There is also scriptural authority, which shows: As it is said, therefore, I am sentient beings, etc., extensively. Existence without difference is manifest desire. Manifest accomplishment is accomplishment, which is in the manner of a definitive word. Whatever craving is without difference is what is manifestly desired only for this. Its characteristic is also like this: all similar shares of the same kind are aggregates, merely other arising, which is to say that merely mentioning is to eliminate differences. Its cause is craving, which is to say that it is the manifestation of that accomplishment. To this, because there is no difference, etc., refers to the craving that desires to exist later without difference in the color, form, and manner of existence of gods and humans. Because there is no ripening, etc., is connected to the context of "to this." Like this, it is obscured and not shown by scriptural authority. A specifically designated entity is the virtue that is practiced in desire, which means that craving for a specifically designated body is a specifically designated entity, which is the virtue that is practiced in desire, but not practiced in form. General entry means that if one is not without desire, then wherever one is born, it is established as that place, which means that a non-specifically designated entity can be established as that place, whether it is born in the desire realm or anywhere else. If one is not without desire, etc., refers to the word without desire from that place, and it should be known that this is obscured and not shown by scriptural authority. Without karma, one will not become many bodies, etc., because it is the cause.
