Therefore, it shows that this is the close grasping, so it is the truth of the origin. Regarding this, not distinguishing and wanting to exist again is called the craving for rebirth. Because whoever wants this, it is not saying "May I become a god" or "May I become a human." Because the joy and desire focused on the object that has been obtained are mixed together, it is called joy accompanied by desire. This refers to the joy and desire focused on the body and objects of enjoyment that have now arisen, and when the two gradually arise, because the two are mixed together, it is called being accompanied by them. Regarding this, joy is the mind with afflictions, which has been shown before. Desire is the nature of attachment, which is well known in itself. Wanting the various objects of enjoyment and the physical body that have been obtained is to be very happy about them, and it is the craving for rebirth, which is said in conjunction with the context. Wanting the various objects of enjoyment that have not been obtained, this is also distinguished because it is focused on various things, and it is the craving for the nature of re-existence. Precisely because of this, it is said that he is very happy about them. Broadly speaking, the two physical objects and the two objects that have been obtained and not obtained, for the body that has been obtained, it is the craving for rebirth. For the object that has been obtained, it is the craving of joy accompanied by desire. For the object that has not been obtained, it is the craving to be very happy about them. Therefore, these four types of craving should be understood in order, that is, in this way, the first is the craving of names, which is the re-generator, but it is not distinguished in this way, but is expressed by one. The second is explained in the manner of the Yogacara school, distinguishing and showing two types of craving. Showing the craving of the re-generator separately is also to distinguish it. Therefore, the nature of taking and abandoning, intention and desire are also included here, that is, this is the truth of the origin, because it is said that joy is accompanied by desire, and that they are very happy about them. If you ask, how should these be understood from this sutra? It means that karma is the field, craving is moisture, and consciousness is the seed, which are shown as dependent origination.

How should this sutra be understood? In order to explain these here, it is said, "The karma of the state of existence is the field." Among them, the karma that abides is the state of formation and the state of existence. Here, the karma of the state of existence is explained as the field. What is meant by "The consciousness that approaches it, together with reception, is the seed" is that because it approaches, it is approaching; the approaching of that karma is approaching. As the Blessed One said, "If the meritorious action is manifestly performed, then the consciousness of merit approaches." Thus it is extensively taught. Whatever is received, the consciousness together with reception is the seed. That reception itself is moisture. What is meant by "those three aspects" are the karma field, the consciousness seed, and the reception moisture. In order to explain that ignorance is the cause of inexhaustible moisture, it is extensively explained. What is meant by "the cause of inexhaustible moisture" is a synonym for the cause of inexhaustible moisture of reception. What is meant by "arising from within this" is that from within this sutra, the ignorance of those sentient beings turns into darkness and arises. What is meant by "from other (sutras), the four abodes of consciousness (explained) by different names" is extensively explained. From other sutras, the four abodes of consciousness are: the consciousness that approaches form abides, approaches feeling, approaches perception, and approaches formation. Those four abodes of consciousness are shown as fields by different names. How are they shown? "Monks, the place of consciousness" is extensively explained. Because it is said to be "the designation of the earth element," the four abodes of consciousness are shown as fields by different names, and the designation of the earth element is shown as the field. As it is said, "Monks, the four abodes of consciousness are called fields, it is their designation of the earth." What result arises from that? What is meant by "whatever object is delighted in and attached to" is extensively explained. What is meant by "whatever object is delighted in and attached to" is the meaning of the four abodes of consciousness focusing on that object.
