It is because it arises dependently. Understanding the six sense spheres of contact as they truly are means that they are truly understood by the transcendental, selfless wisdom that focuses on them. Not knowing them is to be arrogant by not understanding them. What is the difference between not knowing the path and not understanding realization as it truly is? That is, like non-Buddhists, one does not believe that the path is the path. This will make him arrogant towards this teaching itself. It should be understood that the various distinctions of the object of ignorance originate from this direction of entry and direction of return. Entering is what is called coming, going, and sentient beings, and it also produces the ripening of one's own and others' continuums and respective actions, this is the direction of entry. What is returning is the support, the object, the collection and the interruption, and one's own nature, these are the returning aspects. There, the support is the Three Jewels. The object is briefly the Four Truths. In detail, it is the twelve links of dependent origination. The two, collection and interruption, are the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment and their unfavorable aspects. The nature is the true understanding of the six sense spheres of contact, because the characteristic of seeing as self from "I see" to "I know" is the antidote to the view of the perishable aggregate, which is characterized by the view of self. Why is it said "in this and that"? It is in order to state the distinctions of the various names of ignorance in each of the former extremes and so on. And why is the distinction of names stated? It is in order that some may understand its meaning in any way, and at that time, in order that those who are distracted may hear its meaning. If only that itself is stated, others will analyze it. It is also in order that the dull-minded may not forget by repeatedly understanding its meaning, and in order to eliminate the understanding of different meanings because one word has many meanings.

Furthermore, these names are for the purpose of understanding the meaning that arises from the scriptures, just like the names of different kinds of medicine. The expounders of the Dharma do this in order to obtain its meaning and the close connection of words, and to be in accordance with them, and to declare that they themselves are truly aware of each individual Dharma, and to plant its seeds in others. Why are the various aspects of ignorance only shown in relation to ignorance itself? It is in order to show that the various aspects are similarly without difference in meaning. Moreover, what are the incompatible aspects of ignorance? How it exists is shown by three and four aspects. What are the incompatible aspects of ignorance? They are the wisdom arising from hearing, thinking, and meditating, as well as the knowledge of seeing and direct realization. How are they incompatible aspects? Because by the meaning of covering its object, it becomes darkness, and by the meaning of causing wrong views, it is associated with doubt, bad intellect, and afflictions without intellect. For the time being, what shows the combination with universal bewilderment and the affliction of doubt, and what shows the combination with the aspect of darkness and the affliction of no intellect? If one knows, then how can it be shown to be combined with ignorance and the affliction of bad intellect? Feeling, perception, and what is done by wisdom are not different in meaning. The aspect of 'ma' (མ་) is the meaning of disparagement, because this has the wisdom of disparagement, it is called ignorance. The teacher explains that not knowing the beginning, etc., should be understood as two reasons: clinging to self and conforming, and the two that hinder liberation from it. Clinging to self also has three aspects: clinging to permanence, clinging to substance, and clinging to the agent and enjoyer. There are also four aspects that hinder liberation from it: not knowing how to take refuge, not knowing the meaning of what is to be seen, not knowing how to abandon and generate incompatible and antidotal factors, and not knowing that there is no manifest pride in the antidote. From the Yogācārabhūmi.
