Because of not understanding, it is carefully considered that doing so is the cause of not abandoning faults. If it is not afflicted, then leave the not understanding as you wish. Afflicted ignorance is not merely the absence of knowledge, but it has already been understood in this way before. Those who say that all that is not understood is another dharma that is in accordance with knowledge, those people say that ignorance is of two kinds: saying that it always arises universally, and saying that it arises universally when attending to it. The first of these is only one kind of not understanding, and for all knowable things, the opposite of knowledge is considered to arise moment by moment. Because the difference of conditions becomes close, when knowledge arises in a certain object, the habit of that object increases, so as long as that knowledge does not disappear, another ignorance will arise that pervades objects other than that object. Even when that knowledge disappears, it will arise as before. Similarly, when knowledge arises in any object, until omniscience is not attained, the opposite of knowledge, ignorance, will arise for knowable things other than that object. For example, if there is darkness in a room, and there is an object inside, then all the darkness of that object will stop because of its own cause, because all formations are momentary and disintegrating. On whichever side of the object light appears from the hole under the wall, as long as the light does not disappear, darkness will arise in the remaining objects other than that object. When the light disappears, darkness will also arise at the same time as before, this is just an example. So, how can this single substance of not understanding be both afflicted and not afflicted? Both associated with affliction and not associated? Both unwholesome and not unwholesome? Both to be abandoned by seeing and not to be abandoned by it? How can it be reasonable? The antidote to affliction, the opposite of understanding the truth

Being in the condition of afflictions, it is thus established as affliction, because it causes the mind to be afflicted. If, like that, it is in a direction not contrary to wisdom, it will not become a condition for afflictions, and it will not be established as affliction. Regarding the object, the place where afflictions arise, for the wisdom that arises in that place, if it is in the nature of obscuration, because it is the same as the affliction and the place, it is established as being in accordance with the affliction. Regarding others besides that place, if it is in the nature of obscuring wisdom, because it is not the same as the affliction and the place, it is not established as being in accordance with the affliction. Because it is the opposite of virtuous knowledge, it is established as non-virtuous, because one should obtain the wisdom of the antidote and generate respect. Regarding others besides that, because it is the opposite of wisdom, it is not established as non-virtuous. Because it is the opposite of the path of seeing, it is to be abandoned by seeing. Because it is the opposite of the path of meditation, it is to be abandoned by meditation. When establishing with different thoughts, it is also not a wrong establishment. For example, the movement of body and speech, and the two terms, are established as virtuous and non-virtuous due to thought. Because from that gateway, the mind that initiates everything is closely connected with entering and returning. The emanations of the Buddha are explained separately, and being established as the Buddha himself, this is the intention to make the mind control the Buddha, and how sentient beings universally generate respect for the Buddha through that gateway, so there is no fault in considering this. Speaking of the two kinds of ignorance is also, when the mind attends to what is knowable, wisdom does not arise, and there, it is established that not understanding its opposite universally arises, because one can obtain the entry of one's own subtle increase. It is not at all times, nor is it in all places. Whatever affliction is in accordance with, it arises and ceases together with that affliction. Like that, there is no fault.

Thus. Therefore, it is established that ignorance is another dharma that is incompatible with wisdom. The remaining consciousness has not yet been written. This is the only path to the city of Nirvana. The rays of the sun of the Tathagata's speech are clear, the path traversed by thousands of noble ones, which is selflessness. It is also seen by the blind, but not discerned. Therefore, what is the self that arises from the realm? May it also become its good, may they be accomplished. May what I hold, enable the Muni to always enter the excellent practitioners, and may it also be accomplished. The first chapter of Dependent Arising and the commentary on the Sutra of Differentiation, composed by the teacher Vasubandhu, is complete. The abbot of Li, Surendrakaraprabha, and the translator-reviser Bhikshu Namkha translated, revised, and finalized it. The explanation of the differentiation of the first chapter of Dependent Arising.
