Furthermore, if both desire and ignorance are included in what is taken according to the Abhidharma system, then, for example, although it has already been shown that the cause of a lotus is the root, just as it does not become causeless because the root is said to be the cause, similarly, here, since the cause of ignorance is not stated, if it becomes causeless, then why would it follow that samsara has a beginning? Because the cause of ignorance is not to be stated here, this is what I understand, and therefore, there is no opportunity to refute this. Similarly, other limbs are not stated after old age and death, and it does not follow that samsara has an end. Others say that by explaining contact, it is explaining inappropriate attention. For example, in other sutras, it is stated at the time of contact that, relying on the eye and form, habitual attention arising from delusion arises. Also, by explaining feeling, it is explaining ignorance, relying on the feeling that arises on contact from the accumulation of ignorance, desire arises, because it is said in other sutras, if all those things said in other sutras are not said here, it will become a fault. If asked what is ignorance, this form is that what is not knowledge is ignorance, this is a name for the form of negation. This can also be seen in seven meanings. Negating existence is like not being an object of grasping and not being a thing. In another sense, if it is said that a species is not a sentient being, then it refers to something that is not a sentient being, does not abide on one side, and is not a form, just as it appears to be what is other than form. In a similar other sense, if it is said not to be a Brahmin and not to be a youth, then it appears to refer to a distinction of a person who is similar to a Brahmin and a youth, just as it appears to be not all others. In the sense of disparagement, if it is said not to be a wife and not to be a son, then it appears to refer to a bad wife and a bad son. In the sense of scarcity, it is like vegetables without salt and a youth without food. In the sense of separation, it is like a place without monks and a solitary place without water.

Oh! Regarding the meaning of antidotes, it's like lacking merit and lacking fame. The Compendium of Verses (verses from the Compendium of Topics) is: 'Existing things are cessation, and otherness and similarity, disparagement and scarcity and separation of meaning, these exist in antidotes.' This is it (the Compendium of Verses). Here, it should be understood that there are some meanings. For the time being, merely the absence of knowledge is not ignorance, because in this way, the absence of things itself is understood to be the very cause of the arising of formations. If it is said that ignorance ceases, therefore formations cease, then this cessation is also unreasonable. In other Sutras, it is said that pervasive connections and bonds, etc., themselves are also unreasonable. Improper attention being the cause is also unreasonable. For the time being, how can non-attachment to desire become the cause of all afflictions in worldly phenomena? That is merely the absence of attachment. Merely the object of focus cannot become the main cause of conceptual thought. Those who desire to gain benefit from conceptual thought will become afflicted. Ignorance is also taught as delusion. If it is merely the absence of knowledge, then is it the absence of delusion, or the absence of things without delusion? Or if it is an antidote, then both of these are not knowledge without things, because they are unborn. Whatever is different from knowledge is also ignorance, because this also applies to the eyes, etc. Other qualities similar to knowledge are also not ignorance, because without it, and the substance of wisdom that is non-afflicted and unindicated, would also become ignorance. Disparaging knowledge is also not ignorance, because without it, and the substance of wisdom that is afflicted, would also become ignorance. What is the fault? Afflicted views would become ignorance. What is the fault? It would become impossible to separately express. If wisdom that is different from that and associated with afflictions becomes ignorance, what is the fault? Unmixed ignorance would disappear. Unwholesome views would also not be associated with the root of unwholesomeness. Small knowledge!
