If asked, what different distinctions are there? There are none. Then why are two stated? Because one explains the other. If any one is stated, then there will be the meaning of the Samkhya school, or it will be thought that there is birth, because they do not think that even without birth there are cause and effect, but rather that birth is the arising from what has not arisen. Furthermore, if it is not said, "This being born, this is born," then the permanent cause will not have been negated. If it is not said, "This existing, this arises," then it will not have been definitively established. If it is said, "What being born, what is born," then only that exists, that exists. It is not from the permanent self and others, because if it were so, the permanent cause would not have been negated. Therefore, both are necessary. Others say that it is to show different limbs. Others say that it is to distinguish three parts. But with just the words that ignorance and so on are conditions, both are accomplished, so it is not meaningful. As it is also said in the Sutra like the Monkey: "There, the noble hearers who are endowed with hearing, thoroughly, deeply, and properly contemplate dependent origination itself, that is, this existing, this arises, this being born, this is born. That is, by relying on the touch that will experience happiness, the feeling of happiness will arise, etc." There, there are no different limbs, nor are three parts distinguished, so it is not possible not to say two. Others say that there is a difference in meaning, that it is to show the objects of manifest and hidden conditions. The refutation of those is also the refutation of themselves. Others say that the first statement is that the continuous cause exists, and the previously passed result also exists. The second is that the cause is born, so the result is born. There, what is the relationship of explaining existence when beginning dependent origination? Or, if that is also birth, then what difference is there in meaning? If the continuous is birth and existence, then the previous birth is birth, because previously it was birth and later it was existence, so without saying birth, why say the time of existence? Round and long

Etc. And if yogurt and milk, etc., also arise and exist, then it should be stated here what cause exists if it exists. The opponents say that if this exists, this will arise, meaning that if the effect exists, the cause will be destroyed. If you think so, then the arising of the effect will become causeless. Like this, because this arises, this arises, therefore it will not become causeless, saying this is showing what has not been shown, it is just self-righteous words. Because it is not a sutra, and starting to explain dependent origination, what is the relationship of explaining destruction? The destruction of the cause is not arising, nor is it dependent on the effect, because the destruction of momentary dharmas has no conditions. If this meaning is correct, then it would be said, "If this exists, this will not arise," and if you do so, it will be very clear to understand. Therefore, this meaning is not like that. Others say that the first sentence shows the conditions of co-arising, such as touch and feeling, or sprout and sickle. The second sentence is what was born earlier, such as being born from existence, or sprout from seed. If these can be established here, then they cannot be established from sutras like the monkey, because only the conditions of co-arising are shown. Others say that the two sentences are to negate causelessness and permanent cause, if there is no cause, then nothing will arise, and the permanent cause is not self-nature, Ishvara, and atoms, etc. Those who can negate both statements even without the first sentence, therefore those are not the meaning. The Yogacara school says that because there is no abandonment, and the meaning of arising from impermanent conditions, two sentences are said. "If it exists" refers to not abandoning, as it is said in other sutras: "Even if there is desire and aspiration, will you not separately experience the inner desires? Or is it not there?" It is said in detail in the Dharma named "Distinguishing the Differences of Existence, etc.," where the definition of dependent origination is.
