Having asked, the Blessed One said: Monks, the characteristics of dependent origination are of three kinds: the characteristic of arising from an unmoving cause, the characteristic of arising from an impermanent cause, and the characteristic of arising from a powerful cause. These have been fully explained in the initial teachings. The statement "This being, that arises" is the characteristic of arising from an unmoving cause, because it shows that existence itself is the cause. The statement "This arising, that arises" is the characteristic of arising from an impermanent cause, because it shows that arising itself is the cause. For example, "Conditioned by ignorance, actions arise" and so on, is the characteristic of arising from a powerful cause, because it shows the nature of the cause through the certainty of the preceding and following limbs. The statement "Conditioned by ignorance, actions arise" means that ignorance is the cause. The rest should be understood in the same way. The meaning of cause is only what was previously stated. The definitive word is that because it arises from that cause, it is a cause, and it is a synonym for "completely arising." What is the cause? It is the principal cause. Why is the cause shown? Is it not referring to the reason, the operative cause, and the basis? If any one of them is mentioned, it will be refuted. In the case of dependent origination, it shows that the cause of what arises in dependence on what is this. Others say that if the reason is mentioned, the immediate cause and so on will not be understood. If the basis and the operative cause are mentioned, what fault is there? The sound of cause is also seen elsewhere. In order to generate the correct view, the cause and the condition are the same, and Brahma the Lord speaks of the cause, that is, showing the cause and so on. Therefore, those are unacceptable. What is the classification of dependent origination? Starting from this question, it is to show the classification of ignorance and so on. Ignorance and so on are not dependent origination, but what are they? They are dependently arisen. The Blessed One has said so in other sutras.

That (te). What is dependent origination? It is like this: because this exists, that arises, and so on extensively. What are the dharmas of dependent origination? They are from ignorance and action, to birth and old age and death. What is the meaning of this? Dependent origination refers to the common characteristic of all conditioned dharmas, that is, arising from the unarisen. Then, how can it be distinguished in other ways? How can it be explained that aging is different from the state of having aged? Why? Because there, whatever is dependent origination is said here to be the first dependent origination. There, whatever is the dharma of dependent origination is here dependent origination. Then, if that is the case, why not say, "The difference between dependent origination and dependent origination should also be explained to you"? Because this category of dharma refers to dependent origination, and in order to explain its sutra and extensive explanation, the Buddha said, "Monks, explain to you the first and the difference of dependent origination," so there is no contradiction. Some people think that the meanings of "arising" and "becoming" are different, which is also to be eliminated, because there is no other dependent origination other than dependent origination, which is only to show that it is a dharma to be examined. Words arise from words, if ignorance is also dependent origination, then what is its cause? The Blessed One said that, compared to the category of dharmas with cause, with condition, and with basis, improper attention is also the cause of ignorance. In the Mahagarbha Sutra, it is also said that the five obscurations are also the cause of ignorance, that is, "What makes ignorance exist? It should be said that it is the five obscurations." Wrong view is also the cause of ignorance, because if one constantly cultivates wrong view, after death the body will be reborn in hell. Even if one shares merit with people a hundred times, one will become very foolish.

Attachment and so on are also mentioned in three verses, saying that the attached do not understand, and the attached do not see the Dharma. It is also shown what causes contact, that whatever aggregate of formations, all of that arises dependent on contact. In the Sutra of the Great Belly, it is also shown that ignorance is also the cause of ignorance. What is the leakage that is truly known as it is? There are three types of leakage: the leakage of desire, the leakage of existence, and the leakage of ignorance. From the arising of ignorance, it is called the arising of all leakages. Ignorance arises only dependent on ignorance, not from improper attention and so on, because it arises only from delusion. From one's own kind, when one arises, improper attention and so on will make it grow even more, because the growth of the seed is even more difficult to abandon. Therefore, it is also said that it is its cause. So why is its cause not mentioned in this sutra? Because that also needs to say others, and one should begin to show the order of arising from what is relied upon. For what purpose are the twelve branches shown, then there is no need to show the cause of ignorance, because that will also be shown later. Although the cause of ignorance is of its own kind, here it is not intended to say that the cause of each branch is of its own kind, therefore, here it is not to say its cause. Here some people argue that because the cause of ignorance is not mentioned, samsara will become having a beginning, and the branches will be superfluous, and there will be no end to them. The answer is that improper attention is the cause of ignorance, which has already been shown in other scriptures. The branches are also not superfluous, because it is included in grasping. It will also not become without end, because the two of them act as causes for each other, like a chicken and an egg. Just like this, habitual attention arises from delusion, that is what is said from there. So, since it is said that all branches are caused by others, then it would be too much to not mention the cause here.
