If it is said that it will become like that, then there the combination of words is another way, and here it is also another way, so what is wrong with it here? What is said about desire and so on, for those, whether it is intention or attachment, is what is closely taken. Just as it is said in other sutras: "For whatever there is desire and attachment, that is what is closely taken here." For that, the intention that appears to be possessed is desire. For that which is possessed, the joy that appears for that is attachment. How are intention and attachment closely taken? Through that, desire and so on, those will become taking. When that arises, then his mind will become the taker. If it is said that the self-utterance is closely taken, it is intention and attachment. In the "Impurity Sutra" it is said: "Monks, for that, is the self-utterance closely taken, is it permanent, steadfast, fundamental, of a nature that is completely unchanging, and are those that truly abide as such closely taken?" How can those words that are spoken be valid? For that, whatever object is measured by self-utterance, whatever is taken, that is shown as the close taking of self-utterance. If intention and attachment are closely taken, then isn't it said that the category of taking with craving as the condition is craving itself? If it is said that craving for feeling is shown as the condition of the category of craving for desire and so on, then what fault is there in that? Even if it is not shown that way, how is this known? With craving for feeling, how reasonably, for the feeling of happiness and so on in the three realms, and with reasons such as having and so on, seeking desire and becoming attached to those? Others combine words like the sense base of form, there, desires are as said in the verses: "Whatever is various in the world is not desire, only the attachment of discrimination is the true desire of men." Those who desire with what, those are only considered as the only desire. For what is desired, form and so on, various things, are desired by those who have attachment, but not by those who do not have attachment. Therefore, the desires of those are not uniquely determined. The following half verse shows that meaning, the various things of the world are just like that.

is abiding. However, all teachings subdue desire in it. Thus it is said. Therefore, the attachment of universal discrimination is desire here, and that itself is the proximate cause. Views, moral discipline, asceticism, and the assertion of self are also the same, just as it was initially taught, and those themselves are the objects of grasping. What is the proximate cause for those who consider desire to be in objects? Everything is also subject to rebirth. How do they grasp rebirth? Because those actions that become rebirth through differentiation cause existence to occur. Alternatively, those desires and so on themselves are called grasping because those who crave feelings grasp them in a way that manifests attachment as a reason for having them and so on. For example, saying that one is a giver of alms is like showing here that what is given is alms. When the differentiators state what the proximate cause of desire is, what is it? Apart from views, moral discipline, and asceticism that are fully associated with desire, anything other than that, such as desire, universal combination and bondage that are fully associated, subtle increase and proximate afflictions, and universal entanglement, these are called the proximate cause of desire. The four views are the proximate cause of views, from the view of the aggregates of destruction to considering views as supreme. What is the proximate cause of moral discipline and asceticism? In any case, some of them hold moral discipline as supreme and become purified, liberated, definitively liberated, happy, and completely transcended from suffering through moral discipline. They will attain complete liberation from happiness and suffering. Holding asceticism as supreme, and becoming purified, liberated, and definitively liberated through asceticism, and so on, is as before. Holding both moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, that is, becoming purified by both moral discipline and asceticism, and so on, is as before, and that is the proximate cause of moral discipline and asceticism. What is the proximate cause of the assertion of self? Apart from form and formlessness, and views that are fully associated, and moral discipline, and asceticism, anything other than that, such as form and formlessness and complete
