If someone objects, saying that if you think so, then "consciousness" becomes just a category of "knowing." The two, knowing and consciousness, would not be synonymous. The mental dharma called "knowing" would also not be included in the aggregate of formations. Such a view is not held by any school. Therefore, consciousness is a different category from knowing, just as measuring with a "bre" (a unit of measurement) is different from measuring with an "immeasurable palace," or like a pearl necklace and a temple. The four great elements are the earth, water, fire, and wind elements, whose characteristics are solidity, liquidity, warmth, and motion, respectively. The forms that serve as a basis are the sense faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body. Their objects are form, sound, smell, taste, and the tangible that is the undifferentiated four great elements. The object of mind is the non-manifesting form. Here, it should be understood that the body faculty and form, sound, smell, taste, and touch belong to the same category. These forms and the previous names are summarized as one, and if it is shown that the two are one, it is to eliminate other conceptual elaborations. Are not the later moments of a born moment, name and form, caused by name and form? If asked, how can they be caused by consciousness? Here, it is said that the moment of one's own kind is the cause of a different kind of limb, which is not meant here, but rather that a special dharma is the cause of a different kind, so it refers to the cause of the initial arising, not the cause of the continuum of what has already arisen. If it were not so, then ignorance should also be said to be the cause of ignorance, and consciousness should also be said to be the cause of consciousness, because the first moment pervaded by formation should also be said to be the cause of the lower. It is like initially being in a soft state, from the soft state arises a long state, from the long state arises a round state, from the round state it becomes a hard state, from the hard state limbs arise, and hair, body hair, nails, etc., also arise, here soft

Just as it is not said that "Nunu Po" and others are the cause of "Nunu Po" and others, so too should it be understood here. Why are the four aggregates called "name"? Because of change, it is called "name," because of the differences in object, form, and various distinctions, without ceasing, its continuum completely changes. After death, abandoning the body of form, in the things of another birth, its continuum completely changes. As it is said in the Great Name Sutra, "What is it called, where will it go?" etc. If it is said that all actions (Sanskrit: saṃskāra) that are not associated with mind are merely nominally established as "name," then what is the meaning of establishing form and sound, etc.? They, as it is said, include past and future objects, as well as other kalpas, by name, so they are called "name." The object of the eye is form, which is commonly known in the world, so why are all the four great elements and what is made from the four great elements called "form" here? It is because of harm, therefore it is said in other sutras: form is called harm. As it is said in the verse of the gods: "Where does the sick person sleep? Like being pierced by a thorn, they are harmed by pain." Also, as it is said in the Minor Works: "Those with bodies that generate desire, if they seek desire, if those desires are not fulfilled, like being pierced by a thorn, they are harmed by pain." What harms the four great elements and what is made from the four great elements? The collection of hands, that is, touch, etc., makes them become other. How are those who act in form harmed? They are harmed by the fire of its earth. Recognizing in the number of sentient beings, similarly, they are harmed by their own fire. Because having extraordinary abilities can also harm. Even if it is invulnerable, it is called form because it is of its kind, like the emanation of the Buddha. Others say: form is an obstacle. This does not match that verse. Cold and warmth, as well as hunger, etc., cannot be said to be obstacles. How can something that is not discernible be form? Discernment
