What does the term "pa" mean? And what does "bstsags pa" mean? It is said that it refers to a dharma that is not associated with mind, or rather, it refers to the state that continues to exist until the fruition arises. The rebirth consciousness that arises from that shows that it is caused by the condition of formations (འདུ་བྱེད།). Through what it has done, it is closely connected. For example, a thief burning a city, a meadow being discolored by hail, and "what the noble ones see is happiness," and so on. These also exist in the same way as they contradict the sutras. The Blessed One also said that all these aggregates of formations depend on contact (རེག་པ།), but not on attainment, etc. Formations that are not associated with mind do not exist as substances either, but are inferred from other states in which form, etc., exist as substances, such as ability and complete combination, as well as distinction, the other shore and this shore, and distance and proximity, and so on. How these are not substances should be understood from the Abhidharma-kośa. Also, the absorption of mindlessness, and the mind that arises after emerging from the cessation of perception, and the recollection that arises from repeatedly reciting written texts or constantly seeing meanings, and the rhododendron flower soaked in lime water, which later produces red stamens after fully ripening, for these, is there any other dharma that is not associated with mind in between? Through habit, recollection arises; one should examine in which instant it arises. Therefore, even if one admits that the six consciousnesses completely imbued by formations are consciousnesses conditioned by formations, even if one admits the cessation of absorption of those with and without mind, etc., even if one admits that past actions are the cause of rebirth consciousness, even if one admits that its cause and effect are imperishable, etc., are conditions, if one understands according to the literal meaning, then the meaning will not be established in that way. Therefore, it should be understood that the meaning here is intentional. Here,

What is that? It is the rebirth that comes from the complete transformation of the continuum of the Alaya-vijñana, which is fully prepared by actions. The ability to arise here refers to the consciousness that arises from the cause of actions. Furthermore, when it is said in the sutras, "the six consciousnesses," this is to show the place by the place, and the cause by the effect, in order to show the continuous flow of consciousness that corresponds to it. Showing the place by the place also exists. For example, in the Nakshatra Sutra, it says: "Bhikkhu, the body of the Blessed One is old and wrinkled, and the senses have changed. Just as it is shown from the eye sense to the body sense, those senses have changed, because they have the ability to see." So what is it? It is the abode of the senses and their location. In the Speaker Sutra, it is also said: "At the time of death, the senses are clear and distinct." Although it is said in this way, the clarity of the senses cannot be seen, but only its location and the support of the senses can be seen. In the world, it is also said: "This person's eyes are lovely, and the eyes on the face are like the petals of a blue lotus." This is seeing with the eyes and showing its location. Showing the cause by the effect also exists. For example, in the sutras, it says: "Bhikkhus, wind is disease, it is a great disease." Here, wind is not the disease, but the cause of the disease. In the verses, it is also said: "Cut off all desire." Here, it does not mean cutting off the continuum of desire, because that has not manifested. So what is it? It is the cause and its seed. For example, in the Dharma Abhidhamma, it says: "What is the touch that is caused by the four great elements?" It is explained in detail up to hunger and thirst. Those two are not touch, but the cause of those two is touch. In the world, it is also said: "Planting the seed of a tree, planting the seed of a flower." Here, it does not mean planting the seed directly, but what is it? It is the cause of those. The name of reliance shows reliance, and the fruit shows the cause. Why is this called Alaya-vijñana? Because it is the basis of the seeds of all dharmas. The consciousness of taking and abandoning.
