If the action of merit manifests, then approaching with merit is this consciousness. Likewise, it is said that it will approach until the immovable. Here, it is also said that consciousness is due to the cause of action. Therefore, it is said that wherever one approaches with action, there is consciousness. This is determined here to be conditioned by action. Furthermore, due to the accumulation of bodily actions accompanied by harm, one will be born in the world between how much harm, therefore it is said that breathing in and out is also not the cause of birth. For the time being, that is how it is in the Sutra Pitaka. How is it with reason? If breathing in and out, etc., change due to the cause of ignorance, then the Arhat will not have it. If again, due to that cause, it is the consciousness of rebirth, then the Arhat will also have it. For the time being, how do you think that the actions of the body, etc., are all due to the cause of ignorance? Those are not absent even in the Arhat. Breathing in and out, etc., will also change in the same way. If you think what is the action of the body, etc., of the Arhat, then those are not the actions of the body, etc., because it is not manifesting rebirth. Such breathing in and out, etc., are not. Therefore, it is also certain by reason that the characteristics of merit, etc., are considered here as the distinctions of the actions of the body, etc., the actions of the body, etc. What is merit? What is non-merit? What is the immovable? If you say that those words are not shown, then say this: virtuous actions performed in the desire realm are merit. Non-virtuous actions are non-merit. The virtuous actions performed in the form and formless realms are called immovable. Why is it called immovable? Moving is shaking, meaning that the nature will change into something else. That is the nature of immovability, so it has immovability. Because in meditation and the formless realms, it cannot be shaken by this, so it is immovable, because it is inconsistent with the lower ground.

It is because that side does not move. The karma that arises there is immovable. Others say, from that ground, why is the ripening of karma immovable? The answer is, any karma performed in the desire realm, completely grasped by other causes such as aspirations, will be born in the realm of the gods, or in the realm of the pretas, or will ripen in hell. What ripens in the first category of gods will ripen in the sixth category. What ripens in the realm of the gods will ripen in the realm of humans. As stated in the sutras, people with little merit, etc., and like an ounce of salt, and as stated in the Sutra of Ear Ornaments. In the form and formless realms, any karma performed other than meditation and the formless realm will not ripen elsewhere. Therefore, it is called immovable ripening. If one does not consider the virtue of meditation to be merit, then as stated in the Sutra of Abiding: When the Blessed One created the world, some sentient beings exhausted their lifespan, exhausted their karma, and exhausted their merit, and died and transmigrated from the category of gods of clear light, and were born here with the same status as humans, these would be contradictory. Merit exists, and when showing the three karmas of merit, etc., calling it immovable is to explain its difference, just like the once-returner, etc. They are not stream-enterers, but are indicated by a name of difference. Others say that the karma of experiencing happiness is merit, the karma of experiencing suffering is not merit, and the karma of experiencing neither suffering nor happiness is immovable, that is, the karma above the third dhyana. Therefore, the Blessed One said: In these three dhyanas, these noble ones are moving. It is also said: In this fourth dhyana, these noble ones are immovable. In this way, the feeling of neither happiness nor suffering in the lower realms is not a ripening. This would also contradict the sutra, as stated in the sutra:

Du. Some sentient beings who are close to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception die when their lifespan, karma, and merit are exhausted. Some pass into nirvana right there. In the fourth dhyana, it is shown to be immovable because there is no movement of oneself. Other dhyanas are not immovable, because the lower grounds are movable. It can be said to be nominally immovable, like the extinction of its limbs. If those are like that, then the actions of body, speech, and mind are temporarily not meritorious, non-meritorious, or unmoving formations, and from this sutra, it is established that this is the intention of the Blessed One. Why? Because it is not said that karma is conditioned by ignorance. If the nature of karma is that those are formations due to the differences in karma, then how should one know which karma actually produces formations? As it is said in another sutra: The Blessed One said that which produces formations, therefore the aggregate of grasping at formations is taught. In another sutra, the Blessed One also taught that the aggregate of grasping at formations is the six groups of thoughts. How does karma actually produce formations? It is planting what has not been planted. How does one plant? It is because one initially places its seed in the stream of consciousness. What is called a seed? It is a difference in ability. What dharma is called ability? It is the substance of the cause. For example, the fruit of a grain depends on the differences in conditions such as earth, ashes, and water to sprout in the form of a sprout, and this substance of the cause is called a seed. Also, like a flower of a Madulunga fruit smeared with beeswax, it becomes the substance of the cause for turning into a red stamen. Also, like melting or hardening copper and other things, there is something that transforms them into gold and other forms, and those are examples. The noble Shariputra also said: Bhikshus, meditators who possess miraculous powers have power over their minds.
