Furthermore, to be manifestly attached to the mind of discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom is also the work of the devil. To make generosity a source of pride, to hold discipline as supreme, to cling to patience, to grasp at diligence, to have characteristics in meditation, and to have wisdom wandering, are also the works of the devil. The mind that delights in and admires solitary places, and falling into equanimity, are also the works of the devil. To make little desire, contentment, the merits of practice, and reducing possessions a source of pride, are also the works of the devil. 'I abide in emptiness, I abide in signlessness, I abide in wishlessness, I abide in non-proliferation, I abide fulfilling the command of the Tathagata,' to be proud of this, and also conceptualization, are the works of the devil. Son of the gods, as much as there is of conception, discrimination, complete conception, seeing, hearing, differentiation, and the place of consciousness, that much is the work of the devil. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, from where does the work of the devil arise? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, the work of the devil arises from diligence. Why is that? Son of the gods, the devil seeks opportunities in the diligent. What can the devil do to the non-diligent? That itself is the work of the devil. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, how is a Bodhisattva diligent? How is one not diligent? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, as much as there is union with duality, that much is not diligence. Why is that? The abiding of the world is possessed of union with duality. Son of the gods, this called 'diligence' is a term for proper union. This called 'proper union' is a term for non-union. This called 'non-union' is a term for non-proliferation. This called 'non-proliferation' is a term for proper union. Son of the gods, where there is no union with the eye and no union with form, this is called the proper union of a Bodhisattva. Where there is no union with the ear and no union with sound, no union with the nose and no union with smell, no union with the tongue and no union with

Not associating with form, not associating with body, not associating with touch, not associating with mind, not associating with dharma, this is called the correct association of a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, these twenty sons of gods are the excellent deeds of the Maras of the Bodhisattvas. What are the twenty? They are: To attend, serve, and respect those who desire the practice of yoga for liberation and who are afraid of samsara, is the work of Mara. To individually discriminate emptiness and to abandon sentient beings is also the work of Mara. To individually discriminate the unconditioned and to be weary of the roots of virtue of the unconditioned is also the work of Mara. To generate samadhi and to seek not to regress from samadhi is also the work of Mara. To teach the Dharma but not to generate great compassion in those who listen to the Dharma is also the work of Mara. To be endowed with qualities and to be angry with those who break their vows while seeking a place of giving is also the work of Mara. To proclaim the words of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas and to conceal the words of the Mahayana is also the work of Mara. To conceal profound words and to proclaim various words is also the work of Mara. To know the path of the Bodhisattvas but not to seek the path of the Paramitas is also the work of Mara. To receive praise for diligence but not to encourage sentient beings who are not diligent is also the work of Mara. To accumulate roots of virtue but not to manifest the mind of enlightenment is also the work of Mara. To abide in the yoga of Vipassana but not to allow sentient beings to grasp pure Vipassana is also the work of Mara. To seek the complete exhaustion of afflictions and to reproach the afflictions of the continuum of samsara is also the work of Mara. With wisdom to discriminate, but not to hold the focus on great compassion, is also the work of Mara. All virtuous deeds performed without skillful means are also the work of Mara. Not seeking the treasury of the Bodhisattvas, but holding secret words that benefit the world, is also the work of Mara. Although having heard much, being suspicious of the wisdom of others, and concealing the teacher's teachings on the Dharma is also the work of Mara. Giving advice for worldly needs, and much
