I refer to the difference between what is difficult and easy to abandon by the path of seeing as subtle and coarse. I refer to the difference between what is easy, difficult, and extremely difficult to abandon by the path of meditation as small, medium, and large. This refers to the afflictions abandoned by the nine grades of the great path of meditation, such as the great of the great. Alternatively, what is to be abandoned by the supramundane path is to be abandoned together with its imprints, so it is difficult to abandon, hence it is called subtle. What is to be abandoned by the mundane path is easy to abandon, hence it is called coarse. Alternatively, those who have few afflictions are called subtle. Those who have many afflictions are called coarse. Alternatively, the afflictions that belong to the form and formless realms are inward-looking, hence they are called subtle. The afflictions of the desire realm are attached to the five desirable qualities and are outward-looking, hence they are called coarse. The interval of all arising of afflictions means that not only are they not associated with those three afflictions, but it also shows that they are not associated with doubt, knots, bonds, and so on. The darkness of ignorance and the cataract of cataracts, and so on, show that they do not coexist with the dharmas that are impaired by them. Although ignorance has already been mentioned among the afflictions above, the sutra says, "Without ignorance, others do not arise." Because ignorance is the root of all afflictions, it is mentioned separately here as well. Ignorance itself is darkness, so it is the darkness of ignorance. For example, just as darkness makes things invisible and sees them wrongly, so too ignorance sees suffering as happiness, hence it is called the darkness of ignorance. Cataract itself is a cataract, so it is the cataract of cataracts. Like a cataract, there are faults of other lives, and the truth is not seen. Because it is obscured, it is called an obstruction. Just as being separated by a wall, one cannot see the things on the other side of the wall, so there are faults of this life, and the truth is not seen at all. Alternatively, the characteristics of karma and afflictions of other lives are not

Not knowing is ignorance. Not understanding the nature of suffering, the result of karma and afflictions, which has the nature of various harms, is darkness. Not understanding the karma and afflictions of this life is dimness. Because of the cause of afflictions, various harms arise in this life, and not understanding that the aggregates themselves are also the nature of various sufferings is a cataract. Not knowing what karma one has done will result in what fruit in another life is an obscuration. Not understanding that those fruits will not pass away from this life and are without self-nature is severance. The association and co-existence between all the arising dharmas that are in accordance with the aspect of decay is called not dwelling together, not only not dwelling together with those decaying dharmas, but also falling away from attaining dharmas that belong to the side of afflictions, such as qualities and higher levels. Those that have not been attained will also not be attained, meaning that they do not associate with those. "Desire and the turmoil of strife," etc., show the abandonment of faults belonging to the side of the demon, as well as the demons and the deeds of the demons. Desire refers to the qualities of the five desires, such as form. The meaning of strife is as previously stated. Desire and strife themselves are like turmoil, so they are called turmoil. Among the four demons, the five aggregates that are closely taken with form, etc., are the aggregate demon. All the afflictions that operate in the three realms are the affliction demon. The beings who die and transmigrate from that being, that one and another of the same kind of being, are the Lord of Death demon. Those who have entered the side of virtue and wish to transcend the aggregates, afflictions, and the Lord of Death demon, the son of the gods born in the desire realm, the Great Powerful One, who comes near to create obstacles, are the son of the gods demon. Not dwelling together with all the deeds of the demons means clinging to the qualities of the five desires, and the sinful unwholesome deeds such as killing, and other discriminations and imaginations that obstruct the realization of the truth, the demons will find an opportunity.
