All these actions should be understood as the deeds of Mara. In short, if someone is drawn towards liberation and develops genuine faith in virtuous Dharma that accords with Nirvana, but then regresses due to being controlled by attachment, that is the deed of Mara. When guarding the doors of the senses, if one clings to the characteristics and apparent signs of forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, and dharmas that would cause attachment, that is the deed of Mara. Similarly, when abiding in knowing the measure of food, if the mind becomes attached to the differences in taste; if one does not sleep during the upper and lower parts of the night but perseveres in practice, yet becomes attached to the pleasure of sleep, the pleasure of lying down, and the pleasure of relaxing the body, that should be recognized as the deed of Mara. When abiding with mindfulness, if one sees children or beautiful women with excellent complexions, and improper thoughts arise in the mind, and one indulges in them; if the mind indulges in many worldly affairs; if one inquires in the midst of much commotion, and seeing evil friends doing unwholesome deeds, admiration arises in the mind, that is the deed of Mara. Similarly, if one has doubts and hesitations about the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, suffering, origin, cessation, path, and this life and future lives, that is the deed of Mara. When attachment arises towards gain and respect, and thoughts of miserliness, greed, dissatisfaction, anger, resentment, hypocrisy, and flattery arise, one should know that this is the deed of Mara. Furthermore, if explained extensively, like these, the deeds of Mara are immeasurable and boundless. As it is also said in the Manjushri Emanation Sutra: Son of the gods, as many kinds of actions as arise, so many are the deeds of Mara. As many kinds of aspirations as there are, as many kinds of wrong views as there are, as many kinds of holding as supreme as there are, so many are the deeds of Mara. As many kinds of desires as there are, as many kinds of thoughts as there are, as many kinds of pride as there are, as many kinds of complete understanding as there are, so many are the deeds of Mara. Son of the gods, furthermore, clinging to the mind of enlightenment is also the deed of Mara. Clinging to the mind of generosity is also the deed of Mara.
