Therefore, giving is used to eliminate poverty, that is, in the case of inexhaustible giving, giving food to those who want food, giving drinks to those who want drinks, and so on. Used for faith, it is to have faith in the selflessness of individuals and the selflessness of phenomena, that is, suchness. Used for accomplishment, it is to constantly accomplish the benefit of others, that is, in the case of inexhaustible giving, to be diligent for the sake of the root of virtue, to make sentient beings enter the thought of holding the mind of enlightenment, which is the inexhaustible conduct of the Bodhisattva, and so on. Used for consciously being born into existence, it is not due to the power of karma and afflictions that one is born into the three realms, but to be born into samsara consciously through aspiration. Used for perfecting accumulation, it is to practice the six perfections in order to perfect the accumulation of merit and wisdom, that is, as mentioned above, the thought of inexhaustible giving is the inexhaustible conduct of the Bodhisattva, and so on. Used for enduring hardship, it is to abandon inner suffering, such as head, hands, and feet, and to endure outer suffering, such as cold and heat, in order to mature sentient beings and mature the Buddhadharma. That is, where, these four monastic sons named Sharadwati are the inexhaustible conduct of the Bodhisattvas. Which four? That is, it is shown by the inexhaustible conduct of the mind of enlightenment, the inexhaustible conduct of teaching the Dharma of giving, and the inexhaustible conduct of maturing sentient beings, and so on. The characteristics of a virtuous friend are initiating, abiding, increasing, and being an immeasurable protector, which is a virtuous friend. Among them, initiating is initiating from the ten non-virtuous actions such as killing, which means to make people enter into abandoning evil deeds. Abiding is to make people abide in the ten virtuous actions such as abstaining from killing. Increasing is the god...

I give and obtain from giving human happiness to obtaining the supreme fruit of enlightenment. Protecting immeasurable beings means protecting them from falling into evil views such as those of non-Buddhists, protecting them from falling into inferior vehicles such as the Hearers, protecting them from falling into the evil paths of samsara, and protecting them from falling into the suffering states of the lower realms. Hearing the Dharma causes all sentient beings to turn away from non-virtue, establishes them in virtue, increases the fruits, and protects them from immeasurable suffering, therefore it is called the aspect of a virtuous friend. Absence of pride means not being arrogant due to lineage, knowledge, etc. Mindfulness is the antidote to heedlessness. Heedlessness arises from two sources: from others and from oneself. That which arises from others is also of two kinds: arising from external objects and arising from sentient beings. Among these, that which arises from external objects refers to the arising of the roots of non-virtue such as attachment from the non-virtuous actions of previous lives, and the performance of non-virtuous actions such as killing. That which arises from sentient beings refers to the arising of afflictions such as attachment because the objects that cause attachment and hatred come near. That which arises from oneself is also of two kinds: arising from the busyness of the body and arising from wrong conceptualization. Among these, that which arises from the busyness of the body refers to the arising of afflictions because one likes to associate with young boys, young girls, beautiful women, royal castes, Brahmin castes, etc. That which arises from wrong conceptualization refers to the arising of afflictions because of conceptualizing desire, longing, harmful intent, etc. By hearing the Dharma, one abandons those afflictions that have previously arisen, and also prevents them from arising in the future, therefore it is called the aspect of mindfulness. Reverence means having no contempt for the Dharma and those who speak it. As it is said in the sutra: Monks, the lion, king of beasts, even when leaping at a rabbit, leaps mindfully, not without mindfulness. Even when leaping at a horse or an elephant, he leaps mindfully, not without mindfulness. As it is extensively taught in the sutra, towards the Dharma and the Dharma
