Because the mind is focused on the equality of all dharmas, it is called abiding in equality. Or rather, equality will be explained below. What are equal? Combine with what is said such as "the equality of sentient beings." From the perspective of sentient beings, the afflictions and so on mentioned by name are not actually established as they are said; everything is of one taste and equal. Because one abides in this equality, it is called abiding in equality. With what is the nature of single-minded concentration equal? It is also equal to non-dual wisdom and enlightenment, meaning it is the same as emptiness. Similarly, the following words should also be applied extensively. With what is enlightenment equal? It is also equal to emptiness, meaning that the self-nature of the concentration of enlightenment and emptiness is one, and in reality, there is no difference. With what is non-manifestation equal? It is also equal to non-arising, meaning that the dharma nature that is separate from the manifestation of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and non-arising, are the same in meaning. Similarly, it should also be applied to non-appearance, and the non-existence of apprehended and apprehender as being of one nature. There is no substantiality of the defilement of clinging to the apprehended and the apprehender; being separate from this is purity, because it is separate from temporary defilements. The nature of one's own mind, from the very beginning, is a pure nature, and is equal. And the nature of the minds of all sentient beings is also the same. Having practiced for a long time and entered into this equality, therefore, it is called entering into equanimity. Abandoning the unfavorable aspects and focusing on them, being equal to everything beneficial and unbeneficial, and so on, is what was said. Beneficial is helping. Unbeneficial is harming; thinking equally about these two is called equanimity. In order to illustrate with equanimity as an example, it was said, "a mind equal to the earth," and so on. Not being high means not abiding with arrogance because of having obtained the excellence of concentration. Not being low means that the concentration of the Bodhisattva is numerous and

Hearing of the vastness of myself, I do not become disheartened, thinking, "I cannot accomplish this." Remaining in such a state, neither high nor low, one becomes unmoving, meaning that nothing can shake one. The phrase "maintaining equanimity in all conduct," and so forth, indicates the complete purification of body, mind, and speech. Maintaining equanimity in all conduct, such as walking and sitting, and not artificially maintaining equanimity after separately examining, but rather conduct that is unfabricated. These two words indicate the complete purification of the body, not entering into tranquility after separately examining, but naturally entering into tranquility at all times. When walking, the senses, such as the eyes, do not chase after external objects; when abiding, there is no desire for pleasure, and one is not distracted by hatred and so forth. These three words indicate the complete purification of the mind. Speaking appropriately and not speaking excessively, not speaking nonsense; speaking the Dharma and speaking truthfully, not speaking falsehoods. These two statements indicate the complete purification of speech. The phrase "understanding the meaning," and so forth, indicates understanding the object of meditation, the Dharma, and the time of meditation. Understanding the meaning of emptiness and selflessness, and so forth, and understanding the Dharma of the branches of the scriptures, which are composed of names, sentences, and letters, these two indicate understanding what is to be meditated upon. Knowing how to meditate in summer, autumn, winter, late winter, spring, and early summer is knowing the time. Moreover, knowing when to meditate in the upper and lower parts of the night is knowing the hour. Knowing "this is the time to get up," "this is the time to eat," "this is the time to sleep," and so forth, is knowing the inappropriate time, and these words indicate knowing the time of meditation. The phrase "following after all the world," and so forth, indicates that the Bodhisattva's samadhi is seized by the union of skillful means and wisdom. Although, as previously stated, equanimity is maintained in all conduct, in order to fully ripen sentient beings, one follows after all the world, such as royalty and Brahmins, skillfully employing ways of acting that are in accordance with them.

And also endowed with, being grasped by wisdom, therefore even dwelling within them, one is not mixed with the world. How is one not mixed? It is said that one transcends the eight worldly dharmas and is not mixed with all afflictions. Even in the midst of bustle, conduct is solitary, which is to follow the world for the sake of sentient beings, and even if one dwells in the midst of much bustle, the mind is solitary and dwells single-pointedly, that is the expression. To abide in such a dharma is to abide in the dharma that has just been taught. Because that Bodhisattva is completely captivated by wisdom, he will not be subject to the power of afflictions and worldly dharmas, therefore he will not abandon the state of non-equilibrium, and being completely grasped by skillful means, he will also appear in all worldly affairs. If it is said that meditation is accomplished by skillful means and wisdom, then what are skillful means and wisdom? Therefore, someone asked, what are the skillful means of a Bodhisattva, and what is wisdom? In terms of abiding in the purity of antidotes, when a Bodhisattva is equally placed, for the sake of looking at sentient beings, etc., the Bodhisattva's meditation, which is grasped by skillful means and wisdom, is extensively proclaimed. "Equally placed" refers to the time of first entering into yoga. To attach sentient beings to the object of great compassion is to think that all sentient beings, gathered by realms, destinies, and birthplaces, are suffering as they correspond to the three kinds of suffering, and to manifest and create thoughts in the mind, this is skillful means. After that, also completely abandoning the characteristics of sentient beings' suffering, etc., to meditate on tranquility and extremely tranquil conduct, this is its wisdom. Those words that are consistent, connect them consistently in the following paragraphs as well. The Buddha's wisdom is the four wisdoms, and to enter into meditation thinking that one should obtain them is to point to wisdom. Not abiding in any dharma is to meditate without being attached to the Buddha's wisdom, etc. The sacred Dharma is the twelve branches of scripture, and to enter into meditation in order to grasp their meaning and words is to completely grasp the sacred Dharma.
