It should be understood with wisdom that correcting all faults that occur according to the Dharma is called the supreme discipline. Guarding the discipline as it was taken, and correcting all faults that occur, these two make the discipline complete. In all retinues of royal families and Brahmin castes, there is no fault, and there is no way to find fault from any aspect, so it is called the undefiled discipline. Not letting the senses such as the eyes freely go to objects that cause desire and hatred, guarding the senses is called the extremely hidden discipline. The Dharma of the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas is all the Dharma of the Buddhas, contemplating all their causes and results, this is the renowned discipline. This discipline is renowned in all vehicles. Things like alms bowls and Dharma robes that are suitable for renunciates are permissible, even if many are obtained, only taking a little of what is needed, because of contentment and few desires, this is called the discipline of few desires. Being content with inferior things like alms bowls and Dharma robes, even if many or good things are not obtained, there is no suffering, and even if they are obtained, enjoying them without attachment, like this abandoning attachment is called the discipline of contentment. Not staying in the midst of busyness, and not thinking of desire and longing, this is mind solitude, like this being separated from the causes that make the discipline degenerate is called the discipline of self-nature solitude. This also shows that the above two disciplines can be accomplished by such a person. How body solitude is shown by abandoning the appearance of busyness, by the discipline of dwelling in a solitary place. How mind solitude is shown by not looking at others, by the discipline of contentment of the noble lineage. Guarding the discipline is not just for the sake of not being blamed by others, but from the bottom of one's heart, one delights in being separated from desire and longing, this is the definition of guarding the discipline. Then, by what are these two, dwelling in a solitary place and the discipline of the noble lineage, accomplished? It is through the roots of virtue, from my mouth...

It is said, "The merit purified by learning and contemplation, and the discipline of economizing on resources." Since all roots of virtue are to be done by oneself, it is taught that one should not remain in the merits purified by learning and contemplation, etc. Initially, guarding the discipline as it is taken from teachers and preceptors, etc., is the discipline of acting as it is said, etc. Whatever benefits sentient beings and becomes the cause of happiness, such as love and compassion, is the discipline of acting for the benefit of sentient beings. Those that become the cause of the complete ripening of the unsurpassed Bodhi and one's own Buddha Dharma are called the discipline of accumulating virtuous Dharmas. They should be combined appropriately according to their respective categories. Since they protect sentient beings from existence and the lower realms, they become companions. Such innate love is the discipline of love, and it should be widely combined like the sound of discipline. For the sake of sentient beings, enduring external sufferings such as cold and heat, and internal sufferings such as hunger and thirst, is called enduring all sufferings. Rejoicing for the sake of sentient beings is called not being discouraged. To definitely think in one's own mind is to be endowed with mindfulness gathered by the five limbs, that is, having the past extreme, the future extreme, the middle extreme, and acting in advance and following along. Among them, a Bodhisattva relies on the past time to correct the faults that have occurred, and in the future time, he will prevent the faults that will occur, and in the present time, he will correct the faults that have occurred, which is having mindfulness of the three times. Before a fault occurs, how should I act and how should I abide so that a fault will not occur? Acting in this way and abiding in this way, one should also strive to think, "What could be wrong?" This is the mindfulness of acting in advance. Relying on that mindfulness of acting in advance, how should I act and how should I abide so that a fault will not occur? Abiding in this way is to observe accordingly.
