Giving to musicians who are attached to the ripening of music and immediately distracted by the joy of playing, giving to musicians is the ripening of karma and the giving of playfulness. Giving for the sake of using the limbs of prostitutes, etc., is giving with wrong thoughts. Giving without believing in karma and its ripening is giving with a mind of ignorance. If this thing is not given, the ghost will eat it, and one will suffer harm such as being cut off or killed, thinking this and giving, this is giving with a seeking mind. Giving while clinging to the view of permanence, etc., is giving with a reversed mind. Giving without the joy of giving manifesting is giving without faith. Giving something that one does not want to give is giving unwillingly. Giving while attached to things is giving with attachment. If I don't give to this person, no one, including my parents, will like me, thinking this and giving, this is giving out of consideration. Giving to this person but not to that person, giving with such a thought is giving with discrimination towards sentient beings, which is what is taught. The remaining three words are explanations: giving to this person will result in great rewards and benefits, thinking this and giving to them is choosing a good field for giving. Giving to this person will result in small rewards and benefits, thinking this and giving is despising the place of giving and giving. There is no such thing as distinguishing sentient beings from the perspective of thought. Also, in language, praising someone who has discipline by saying they have discipline, and belittling someone who breaks discipline by saying they break discipline, thus distinguishing high and low without giving. If one gives something like this to this person, they will give something back later, thinking this and giving is giving in expectation of return. Giving because this person is known as a giver, a generous person, etc., is giving for fame, etc. Saying that oneself is generous and the master of giving, but others are not, and giving, this is giving that praises oneself and belittles others. The Bodhisattva is the preliminary of giving.

You yourself are also happy, and you are also happy when giving. Because there is no regret after giving, you should gradually avoid complete sorrow, inner pain, and regretful giving. If the beggar comes well, but does not give quickly, this is harmful giving. To give after proclaiming the faults of the beggar's caste and lineage, etc., is to cut off the hope of others. To scold the beggars after giving, saying, "You have received my favor in this way," is to give with reproach. To give while clinging to the ripening of the fruit of giving is to give in the hope of the ripening of karma. To say, "I will only give this little bit," is to give by measuring. No matter what method is used to give, if it gives rise to the beggar's anger, etc., this is giving that gives rise to anger, etc. To be overly generous and give a lot to beggars who are greedy for food and the sick, etc., is to give in a way that harms the beggars. To mock the beggar's body, clothing, etc., and like a garland, put those things on the head and neck, etc., and tie them up and give them away, is to give with mockery and ridicule. Giving outwards, the land, etc., will actually be exhausted. Sometimes giving and sometimes not giving is impermanent giving. Because one is not accustomed to giving, whenever a beggar comes, at that time one is not familiar with the way of giving and gives, this is very unskilled giving. That person also gives, why shouldn't I give? Giving in this way is giving by imitating others. To give for one's own life offerings and servants, etc., is to give after completely cutting off. Originally intending to give a lot, but giving less, this is giving less than expected. Originally intending to give something that must be given, but being swayed by attachment, this is giving from being unwilling to being unwilling. Clearly there are poor and destitute beggars, but thinking that they are not fields of merit, one gives to those who are not poor and not destitute, this is giving thinking that sentient beings are not fields of merit. Bodhisattvas are things that should be given.
