It is to practice what should be practiced in order to teach those who should be practiced. Therefore, it is said, "Whatever virtuous dharmas are born," and so on. To abide is not to be smaller than what was born before. To cultivate is to repeatedly cultivate those dharmas in order to slightly increase what was born before. To arise again is to repeatedly cultivate what has arisen in a small way in order to increase it even more than that. Not decaying and not declining have the same meaning, which is not to let what has been born decline. Or, not decaying is not declining. Not declining is not forgetting. To make it extremely abundant is to bring all virtuous roots to the ultimate and complete fulfillment. Why is that? This means that for making virtuous dharmas arise and abide, etc., why should we say "dedication of virtuous roots to Bodhi"? That is the meaning. Until the ultimate end means until the essence of Bodhi is not attained. Not decaying means not disappearing, which is a synonym for "not declining," and should be connected with "increasing and becoming vast." Why is that? This means that the virtuous roots dedicated to Bodhi, why would they decay in the middle before reaching the essence of Bodhi? That is the meaning. Not abiding in all three realms means not creating the cause of being born in the three realms, which is a synonym. Completely exhausted means that those dharmas that transform into the three realms will be exhausted after experiencing the ripening of the fruit. The true abandonment has already explained the inexhaustible. In order to teach extreme abiding in desire, extreme abiding in diligence, extreme abiding in mind, and extreme abiding in observation. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, again said that the miraculous feet of the Bodhisattvas are inexhaustible, and so on. That inexhaustibility is also because the dharmas that should be desired, etc., are inexhaustible, so they are inexhaustible. Among them, miraculous power is the five kinds of clairvoyance mentioned above, or miraculous power

In the fifth section, the direct perception of supernormal powers is explained. The 'foot' refers to the cause or basis for attaining those supernormal powers. Furthermore, it should be understood in four aspects: distinct differentiation, cause, basis, and the manifest accomplishment of the result. In this context, from 'aspiration' onwards to 'investigation,' distinct differentiation is indicated. From 'the root support of these' onwards to 'becoming capable of attainment,' the cause is indicated. From 'that mind attaining capability' onwards to 'not having attained pliancy,' the basis is indicated. From 'that body and mind being pliant' onwards to 'the limit of space,' the manifest accomplishment of the result is indicated. In this context, aspiration is what, relying on reverence and faith, touches upon one-pointedness of mind. Diligence is what, relying on constant practice, touches upon one-pointedness of mind. Mind is what, relying on having meditated on samadhi in other lifetimes, in this life, the mind becomes in accordance with the previous mind, and quickly touches upon one-pointedness of mind. Investigation is what, examining whether there are sinful, non-virtuous dharmas in the continuum of one's own mind, touches upon one-pointedness of mind. The phrase 'the root support and place of these' refers to the four, such as aspiration, or the feet of supernormal power; the root basis or support of these is the four immeasurables. In this context, the word 'root' refers to aspiration and so forth, because these are the root of the arising of supernormal powers. The support and place of aspiration and so forth are the four immeasurables, because one must meditate with a mind endowed with the four immeasurables. Someone might wonder, how do the four immeasurables become the root support and basis? In response to this, it is said, 'Relying on and meditating on these four immeasurables,' which refers to that bodhisattva who wishes to meditate on the four feet of supernormal power. The indication is that one relies on meditating on the four immeasurables from the very beginning. Meditation is repeatedly making it manifest after that. Increasing is meditating in order to bring the four immeasurables to completion.
