Not vowing not to generate faults, and not restoring them according to the Dharma after faults have arisen, indulging in sleep, embraces, and the pleasures of sleep. What is a wrong aspiration? It is saying, 'May I become a god, or any god, or possess gains and respect through this discipline, asceticism, or austerity.' What is corrupted conduct? Some conduct, immediate activities, and diligence in virtue are incompatible and contradictory with the world, and incompatible and contradictory with discipline. What is corrupted livelihood? Some are not content, have many desires, are difficult to support, and difficult to satisfy, seeking alms bowls and robes, etc., through non-dharmic means. What is falling into the two extremes? Some are particularly attached to the merit of desire, and engage in the things of desire without restraint, while others hold to unbearable austerities such as dwelling on thorns or dwelling in ashes. What is not arising? Some hold discipline, asceticism, or views as supreme, believing that liberation and release will be attained through this discipline or this asceticism. What is the corruption of vows taken? Some are completely shameless in every way, and are not afraid to engage in sinful and unwholesome actions. Corrupted discipline is a decaying thing, rotten inside, acting like a stump, claiming to be renunciates when they are not. Corruption of ritual is the corruption of samadhi. What are those things that also distract the minds of others? Any things that cause others to fall from samadhi and cause the mind to be distracted are called sinful and unwholesome things. That is, having much attachment to robes, alms bowls, and other requisites, having many diseases in the body, being very greedy for food, enjoying dwelling in many noisy places, enjoying many worldly affairs, delighting in much talk, and delighting in sleep and embraces, and so on.

What is called "decline" refers to clinging to permanence or annihilation. What is called "those who also cause the views of others to decline," etc., refers to the cause of others clinging to wrong views, the manifestation of afflictions, and the previously mentioned dharmas that become obscurations and feelings, which are also called sinful and unwholesome dharmas. What is a Bodhisattva who has thoroughly cultivated diligence? It is one who has entered into the second correct abandonment, that is, one who cultivates diligently abandoning the unwholesome dharmas that have arisen. Because of this, it is said, "Whatever sinful and unwholesome dharmas have arisen," etc. Sinful and unwholesome dharmas are those mentioned above. "Arisen" means having become manifest. Those that are similar to what has been said above are not mentioned here, but should be viewed as previously stated. What is the reason for this? It is for the sake of abandoning the sinful and unwholesome dharmas that have arisen. Regarding generating desire, etc., what is meant by "Why is it called proper attention?" is this meaning. What is meant by "Those unwholesome dharmas do not accumulate in the mind" is that the sinful and unwholesome dharmas that have arisen cease and are non-existent as soon as they arise, so there is no clinging or accumulation in the mind. Therefore, they do not abide in internal or external objects or directions, and cannot be given names or designations. If those sinful and unwholesome dharmas that have arisen are non-existent, then because they are non-existent, there is no need for the effort of abandoning them, and the question arises as to how the term "abandonment" arises. Therefore, it is said, "Those sinful and unwholesome dharmas arise entirely from the mind," etc. Arising entirely from the mind means that those dharmas arise from the mind. How to know abandonment is to know abandonment. In order to show how to know abandonment, it is said, "By what cause and object?" etc. The cause is improper attention, or the imprints of afflictions. The object is the objects that cause afflictions to arise. What is meant by "By what does attachment arise in the form of ugliness?" is that by what cause and object of afflictions, by making the cause and object, attachment arises in the form of clinging to ugliness, etc., and should be connected in this way.

Those, refer to the place and object where afflictions arise. These, refer to afflictions such as desire. 'With imputed grasping' means pacifying desire with ugliness, etc., which are merely imputed names. But in the ultimate sense, there is neither what is to be abandoned nor the abandoner, because all phenomena abide equally in emptiness. Since it is directly realized by the wisdom of the noble ones, there is nothing to be abandoned. Why is that? It is based on conventional terms, in order to abandon the unfavorable aspects with antidotes. A Bodhisattva who has attained diligence has entered the third right abandonment, which is to cultivate what is to be meditated on in order to attain the unarisen virtuous dharmas. Based on that, it is said that in order to generate the unarisen virtuous dharmas, etc. Virtuous dharmas are the three trainings such as morality, which have not yet arisen, meaning they have not yet manifested. 'In order to generate' means in order to manifest them. Why is that? Why is it called 'immeasurable words are extremely firm' for generating aspiration, etc., in order to generate the unarisen virtuous dharmas? The meaning is that virtuous dharmas are the perfections such as generosity. Aspiration is said to be the root of all virtuous dharmas. The virtuous dharmas practiced by Bodhisattvas are immeasurable, and therefore, the aspiration to practice them is also immeasurable. Therefore, it is 'immeasurable words are extremely firm.' From the aspiration to practice virtuous dharmas, practice arises, and virtuous dharmas are generated. Therefore, aspiration is called the root of all virtuous dharmas. 'To practice' means to bring it to completion. To practice and differentiate those virtuous dharmas means to contemplate the individual characteristics of the virtuous dharmas of aspiration that have arisen, and to think that they should be generated later as well. A Bodhisattva with extremely firm diligence has entered the fourth right abandonment, which is that virtuous dharmas have arisen.
