To settle single-pointedly in a collected manner, that is, to settle again and again on that object of focus, and to generate weariness by considering the faults of cyclic existence, and so forth. The phrase "Why is that?" is a question, meaning, "Why are generating aspiration, striving to exert effort, and holding the mind firmly and settling it correctly called 'appropriate'?" The answer, "Appropriate and extremely connected," and so forth, has been spoken. The antidotes to sinful, non-virtuous dharmas, and the antidotes to sinking and excitement, the practice of those things that are not in accordance with those sinful, non-virtuous dharmas, and so forth, do not arise. Therefore, those are the definitive terms for "appropriate." Among those, what are sinful, non-virtuous dharmas? Those dharmas that are contrary to bringing the three trainings to completion, and so forth. In order to show what those things are, the opposite aspects of discipline, and so forth, have been spoken. "Discipline is damaged" means that whatever discipline of the six branches is damaged is a sinful, non-virtuous dharma. The phrase "Those who also cause others' discipline to be damaged" means that the dharmas that are the causes of others' discipline being damaged are also called sinful, non-virtuous dharmas. What are those? They are the ten causes: (1) not taking it well from the beginning; (2) making it loose; (3) holding it wrongly; (4) carelessness; (5) being completely overcome by laziness; (6) wrong aspiration; (7) conduct being damaged; (8) livelihood being damaged; (9) falling into the two extremes; (10) not causing it to arise; and (11) vows taken being damaged. How is it that one does not take it well from the beginning? It is like this: taking it because of fear of the king, or fear of thieves, or lack of livelihood, or other such circumstances. How does one make it loose? In this case, some people, even after taking vows, have no shame, have little regret, and make the objects of training, and so forth, loose. What is wrong holding? Some people have wrong holding, feeling regret in an inappropriate place, and that regret obstructs virtue. How are carelessness and being completely overcome by laziness? Some people from the beginning
