Those sutras that are taught are the sutras of provisional meaning. Those sutras that are taught for the sake of complete purification, namely the Sutra Mountain and the Perfection of Wisdom, which are taught for the sake of practicing and completely purifying the pure dharmas, those are the sutras of definitive meaning. Those sutras that teach turning away from samsara, namely those sutras that are taught to make beings weary and turn away from samsara, and to make them free from attachment to samsara, those are the sutras of provisional meaning. Those sutras that teach entering into the non-duality of samsara and nirvana, namely those sutras that teach that both samsara and nirvana are without inherent existence, therefore samsara should not be abandoned, and nirvana should not be adopted, and that the two enter into one essence, those are the sutras of definitive meaning. Those sutras that teach various words and letters, namely those sutras that, in order to guide sentient beings, combine various actions and Jataka stories, etc., with various pleasant words and letters and teach them, those are the sutras of provisional meaning. Those sutras that are profound, difficult to see, and difficult to understand, namely those sutras that teach the characteristic of the selflessness of persons and phenomena, the nature of emptiness, which is without an object of focus, and is difficult to see and difficult to understand, those are the sutras of definitive meaning. Because those who cling to objects cannot know it, it is difficult to see. Because noble Shravakas and others with one-sided understanding cannot know it, it is difficult to understand. Those sutras that have many words and letters, etc., namely those sutras that teach many words and letters in order to make the world happy, and teach in accordance with worldly behavior, those are the sutras of provisional meaning. Those sutras that have few words and letters, namely those sutras that make little elaboration of words and letters, and only teach a few key instructions for meditating in samadhi, those are the sutras of definitive meaning. The so-called explanation of sounds in various ways is the explanation of the skandhas, dhatus, ayatanas, etc., in various ways.

In order to show that it does not depend on others, it is said what is the nature of Dharma, what is a person, and so on. Abiding in the view of a person and engaging in certain dharmas, there are two kinds of persons: a person who is learning and a person who is not learning. Among them, abiding in the view that there are persons who are learning and not learning, a person who is learning is diligent in the Noble Eightfold Path, such as right view; a person who is not learning is, on top of those eight dharmas, indicated by liberation and the wisdom of seeing liberation, and is diligent in the ten dharmas, which is called engaging in certain dharmas, and these two are persons. The so-called complete understanding of the engagement of abiding in the view of a person refers to the dharmas of contaminated engagement that are taught, and the person himself, truly knowing the nature of ultimate truth, which is the nature of the Dharma realm itself, is the nature of Dharma. Or, abiding in the view that there is a person, in order to liberate that person, engaging in certain dharmas such as generosity or discipline, is called a person. Understanding that the person and the dharmas engaged in for the sake of the person are without substance, and engaging in generosity and discipline, is called the nature of Dharma. In order to further explain other names for person and the nature of Dharma, others are also said, such as "ordinary being," etc., which are said as names for person. Among them, those who have not entered the aspect of virtuous dharmas such as generosity and discipline are ordinary persons. Those who have entered generosity and discipline and practice them without degenerating are ordinary virtuous persons. Accumulating merit, with dull faculties, relying on the teachings of others to realize the truth, and striving for this, is a person who follows faith. Accumulating merit, with sharp faculties, mastering the truth with one's own wisdom, relying on the taught Dharma to realize the truth, and practicing accordingly, is a person who follows the Dharma. The eighth person is one who enters in order to obtain the fruit of stream-entry, that is, one who abides in the fifteen moments of the mind of the path of seeing. One who abides in the sixteen moments of the mind of the path of seeing is...

It is the person of the Stream-enterer. If one desires the path of cultivation and abides on the path of abandoning the six types of afflictions of the desire realm, it is the person of the Once-returner. If one desires the path of cultivation and abides on the path of abandoning all types of afflictions of the desire realm, it is the person of the Non-returner. Abiding on the path of abandoning all nine types of afflictions of the peak of existence, it is the person of the Arhat. When the Buddha does not appear in the world, having been born in the desire realm, without the instruction of others, abandoning all the afflictions of the three realms, and directly realizing self-enlightenment, it is the person of the Solitary Buddha. Starting from the stage of faith conduct and abiding below the ten bhumis, those who enter for the sake of their own and others' benefit are the persons of the Bodhisattva. The so-called "one person" indicates that it is impossible for two Tathagatas to appear in the world at the same time. The so-called "appearing in the world" indicates the passing away from the palace of Tushita, which means being born in the desire realm. Benefit means completely abandoning the extreme of attachment to desire pleasures. Happiness means completely abandoning the extreme of self-mortification. Compassion for the world means being born in the world and teaching the Middle Way, which is the meaning of having compassion for sentient beings. Meaning refers to being established in the fruit of Nirvana. Teaching is for explaining the Four Noble Truths. The so-called "that is a person" means that what has been said above is a person. The so-called "by the place of conventional words" means that saying "person" is not said because of the real existence of a person, but because if the word "person" is not assumed, it is impossible to make designations and it is impossible to guide sentient beings, so for the sake of many different kinds of sentient beings, it is taught by merely nominally establishing it in the conventional truth. Those who are attached to the real existence of the merely nominally established person are not teaching the nature of reality. The so-called "unborn" refers to suchness, which never changes its characteristics. The so-called "without superimposition" means that it is not permissible to superimpose existence on the nature of emptiness of suchness. The so-called "without action" means not doing non-virtuous actions.
