Equanimity means not being attached to liking or disliking both praise and blame. To be completely happy in one's own mind with happiness and unhappiness means that one's mind is without hypocrisy, and with regard to those things, whether speaking honestly or dishonestly, one is attached to speaking honestly and truthfully. In order to briefly explain the meaning of abandoning afflictions, (the Buddha) said, "The son of the monk Sharadvati is treated in that way," and so on. That is, no matter how one is treated, even if one is treated, one does not think of oneself as superior, and no matter how one is harmed, even if one is harmed, one does not think of oneself as inferior. Abiding in equanimity is called abandoning afflictions. In order to explain the equanimity of protecting oneself and protecting others, (the Buddha) said, "For those Bodhisattvas, protecting oneself and protecting others," and so on. The phrase "not being angry and not seeking" means that even if others cut off limbs such as hands and feet, one will not generate hatred towards others. One does not seek ways to avoid being cut off, nor does one pray. In this way, not generating hatred and not seeking ways to avoid being cut off, because one's own mind is not disturbed, is called protecting oneself. Not generating anger and thereby not disturbing the minds of others is called protecting others. The phrase "transformation of the body" refers to the synonym for others doing bad things with their bodies, and similarly, the transformation of speech should also be understood. The phrase "eyes and so on will not be injured" and so on means that the senses such as eyes and the objects such as forms will not be controlled by them. The phrase "not injured and without damage" means that one will not be controlled by hatred, nor will one be swayed by hatred. The phrase "for the injury that has been done, not retaliating" means that even if others have caused harm, one will not retaliate in turn. The phrase "being equal to both benefit and harm" means that for the two thoughts of wanting to help and wanting to harm, there is no act of loving-kindness or harm.

That which is called "Earthly Contemplation" means to truly realize and establish that all dharmas arise from the mind, and therefore not to follow external objects. Furthermore, "decisively contemplating one's own mind" means not letting one's mind be controlled by anger. "Equanimity is protecting the minds of others" means not disturbing the minds of others. "Equanimity is contemplating oneself" means that even if others harm you, you contemplate your own karma and do not hold grudges against others. "Equanimity is not harming other sentient beings" means realizing that all harm comes from one's own karma, knowing that sentient beings are innocent, so even if sentient beings harm you, you do not harm them. To show the equanimity of protecting oneself and others, in short, it is said that "equanimity is the state of equipoise of a Bodhisattva," which means that equipoise is without attachment or anger. The state of such equipoise is equanimity, therefore equanimity is the state of equipoise. Furthermore, equipoise is to single-pointedly abide in samadhi, and its state is equanimity. Why? Because if there is no attachment or aversion to anything, one can focus one's mind single-pointedly. To show when to practice equanimity and when not to, it is said that Bodhisattvas should practice equanimity at certain times and not at others. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, do not teach Bodhisattvas to practice equanimity at all times, which means that it has been said before that equanimity should be practiced in all aspects, but at certain times, it should not be practiced in this way, but should be combined with the appropriate time. Why is that? This is a question, meaning why should one not abide in equanimity at all times? Because Bodhisattvas are constantly diligent and strive to seek the virtuous Dharma for themselves and others, Bodhisattvas should strive to seek the Dharma for themselves and others at all times, so Bodhisattvas should combine the benefit of themselves and others at certain times.
