Because it arises from the cause of having attachment to things like children, wives, and wealth, and from not having regret for the sins committed, therefore, great compassion is the complete giving away of things that are distressed and impoverished. Impoverishment refers to wealth and grains, etc. Distressed things refer to children and wives, etc. The phrase "beings with broken morality," etc., is because it protects those beings who have broken their morality, so that they do not abandon virtuous Dharma in this life, and are not born into the lower realms in future lives. Therefore, great compassion arises from guarding morality well. That is, not damaging the morality that should be guarded for the benefit of beings. The phrase "because it arises from obtaining the vajra body," the body of the Thus-Gone One, external harm, wind and heat, etc., and weapons, etc., cannot harm it. Internal harm, such as desire and hatred, etc., and sickness and fever, etc., cannot harm it. In order to obtain such a body, because one can endure all the harm done to this impure aggregate of one's own body, therefore, great compassion is accepting the harm done to the body, that is, enduring all external and internal harm. The phrase "because it arises from not regarding body and life," is that one does not cherish one's own body and life, but gathers beings with the four means of gathering, and causes them to fully ripen. Therefore, great compassion is causing all beings to fully ripen. Among them, the body refers to the five aggregates that are taken. Life refers to lifespan, that is, the life force. The phrase "because it arises from completely giving away limbs and parts," limbs refer to the head and limbs, etc. Parts refer to the mouth and eyes, and the thumb and fingers, etc. Because one does not cherish limbs and parts, but gives them to other beings, therefore, great compassion is not regarding, that is, not cherishing limbs and parts. The phrase "because it arises from not desiring one's own roots of virtue," is that one completely dedicates all the roots of virtue that one has accumulated to the benefit of beings, and does not accumulate roots of virtue for one's own benefit.

Great compassion is the cause of generating the roots of virtue in other sentient beings. Furthermore, it is said to arise from focusing on the desire realm, which means that even abandoning the bliss of meditative concentration in the form realm for the sake of sentient beings, it arises from the cause of being born in the desire realm. Therefore, great compassion does not taste the flavor of meditative concentration; it is not attached to the flavor of meditative concentration. The so-called arising from the manifestation of non-attachment wisdom means that the non-dual wisdom that has abandoned the obscurations of afflictions and knowledge pervades all objects of knowledge with its wisdom, hence it is the manifestation of non-attachment wisdom. Because it arises from the cause of that wisdom, great compassion is all-illuminating, focusing on all objects of knowledge. The so-called arising from not denigrating the roots of virtue and all accumulations means that the roots of virtue are the worldly, defiled virtues. Accumulations refer to the accumulations of giving and so forth in the manner of the three circles being completely pure, which transform into accumulations of merit and wisdom. Because it arises from the cause of not denigrating these accumulations, great compassion is not dependent on wisdom; it does not rely on wisdom. The so-called arising from fulfilling the intentions of all sentient beings means that just as a wish-fulfilling tree and a wish-fulfilling jewel fulfill the intentions of sentient beings, so too, I shall fulfill the intentions of all sentient beings, arising from the cause of focusing on this. Therefore, great compassion is universally bestowing, universally focusing on all sentient beings. The so-called arising from not abandoning previous aspirations means that at the very beginning, when generating the mind of enlightenment, one makes the aspiration to liberate all sentient beings from the desolate wilderness of samsara and place them in the city of nirvana. This aspiration is not abandoned even when manifestly attaining enlightenment, arising from such a cause. Therefore, great compassion is that which thoroughly liberates all sentient beings, that which places all sentient beings in nirvana. The so-called arising from completely maturing sentient beings with conditioned phenomena means that conditioned phenomena are giving, ethical conduct, patience, diligence, and so forth, the non-abiding nirvana of...
