The word "ང་བ་" should be added. The explanation of karma is finished. In order to show the difference, (the sutra) says, "The venerable Sharadvatiputra Maitreya is the one who completely protects all sentient beings," and so on. Among them, the word "completely protects" is what is to be shown. The remaining parts are explanations of how Maitreya protects all sentient beings. "Giving up one's own happiness" means that those who possess great loving-kindness do not always wish to possess their own happiness, that is its meaning. "Giving happiness to sentient beings" means that in order to make sentient beings happy in this life and in future lives, one becomes great loving-kindness. Making sentient beings happy in this life means making them possess all the material happiness without fault. Making sentient beings happy in future lives means making sentient beings attain the happiness of gods and humans in future lives. "The loving-kindness of the Shravakas is to protect oneself" means that their loving-kindness only liberates themselves from samsara, and does nothing else. "The great loving-kindness of the Bodhisattvas is to completely protect all sentient beings" means that the loving-kindness of the Bodhisattvas can liberate all sentient beings from the suffering of samsara and the suffering of the lower realms. (The sutra) says, "The venerable Sharadvatiputra Maitreya is the one who saves from the river," the phrase "the loving-kindness of the Bodhisattvas is" should be added. The loving-kindness of the Bodhisattvas means liberating all sentient beings from the four rivers and placing them in the state of Nirvana, that is its meaning. The explanation of the difference is finished. In order to show the various differences, (the sutra) says, "Thus, the venerable Sharadvatiputra," and so on. If the loving-kindness of the Bodhisattva is distinguished, it can be divided into three types. In order to show what the object of the Bodhisattva's loving-kindness is, what the object is, among them, the loving-kindness that aims at sentient beings is, (the sutra) says, "The Bodhisattvas who generate the first mind," and so on. The Bodhisattva who generates the first mind, initially in the state of an ordinary being, towards the unsurpassed Bodhi

Those who abide in the stage of practice by faith up to the generation of Bodhicitta. At that time, because they view sentient beings as truly existing, they vow to place all sentient beings in unsurpassed Bodhi, therefore it is called loving-kindness focused on sentient beings. Loving-kindness focused on Dharma is that of Bodhisattvas who have entered the practice, from the first Bhumi up to the seventh Bhumi are called Bodhisattvas who have entered the practice. Because at that time they train and practice all Dharmas such as generosity, Paramitas, and the aspects of Bodhi, it is called entering the practice. Their loving-kindness is focused on those Dharmas of the aspects of Bodhi, therefore it is focused on Dharma. Loving-kindness without focus is that of Bodhisattvas who have attained forbearance of non-arising Dharmas, forbearance of non-arising Dharmas refers to the eighth Bhumi and above. Because they spontaneously accomplish the absence of characteristics, their loving-kindness is that they realize that both sentient beings and Dharmas mentioned above have not arisen or appeared in ultimate reality, therefore they do not focus on them, so it is without focus. If one does not focus on both in this way, how can it be loving-kindness? Although one does not focus in ultimate reality, in conventional reality, it still appears to focus on sentient beings, so it is called loving-kindness, there is no fault. The inexhaustible loving-kindness has been explained. From the perspective of Bodhisattvas tormented by suffering, the Venerable Sharadvatiputra and others also spoke, and this should also be understood from four aspects. What are the four? They are the most excellent of all Buddhist teachings, the definitive word, the cause, the nature, and the function. Among them, starting from the Venerable Sharadvatiputra, up to the point of thinking that all sentient beings are held as pitiable from the bottom of one's heart, this part reveals the most excellent of all Dharmas. Starting from the Venerable Sharadvatiputra's great compassion, up to the point of calling it great compassion because no other opportunity can be found, this part reveals the definitive word. Starting from because it arises from immovability, up to the point of observing sentient beings who break their vows, this part reveals the cause and nature.
