It indicates the ground. The collection of all combinations, such as attachment, which causes continuous birth in samsara, is called the afflictions of the continuum of samsara. Abandoning those is called cutting off the afflictions. Not cutting off the roots of virtue of the continuum of samsara, etc., indicates being skilled in generating the cause of happiness. Whatever causes continuous rebirth as gods and humans in samsara, the ten virtues, and the roots of virtue such as non-attachment and non-hatred, are continuously maintained from one state to another, so it is called not cutting off the roots of non-virtue of the continuum of samsara. There are also two kinds of skill in the cause of transcendence: not cutting off the cause of great enlightenment, and not practicing the cause of one-sided peace. By what is called the continuous connection of all the combinations for accomplishing enlightenment, it indicates not cutting off the cause of great enlightenment. The meaning of enlightenment has already been stated above. Combination means practicing calm abiding and insight. Whatever meditation on calm abiding and insight attains enlightenment is called the combination for accomplishing enlightenment, and continuously meditating in that way is the continuous connection of all the combinations. By what is called not employing temporary combinations, it indicates not practicing the cause of one-sided peace. Temporary combination means practicing calm abiding and insight, which is the cause of attaining the nirvana of one-sided peace. Not employing means not engaging in such a cause. Alternatively, even though the afflictions of the continuum of samsara are cut off, the cause of attaining great enlightenment is not cut off, so it is called the continuous connection of all the combinations for accomplishing enlightenment. Because the roots of virtue born in samsara are not cut off, and because one does not fall into the nirvana of one-sided peace, it is called not employing temporary combinations. Whatever is called emptiness, etc., indicates being skilled in the unconditioned, that is, obtaining mastery over the three samadhis, and not relying on instructions and subsequent teachings, that

Understanding suchness, and even understanding suchness, not abiding in its aspect. By means of emptiness and signlessness, etc., it is shown to have obtained mastery over the three samadhis. Emptiness, etc., has already been exhausted in the foregoing. The wisdom by which one gains mastery over those three samadhis is called the wisdom of familiarity. That wisdom becoming manifest, or the realization of that wisdom, is being skilled in realization. By "not relying on others for enlightenment," it is shown that one understands suchness without relying on instructions and subsequent teachings. Understanding the nature of non-duality of emptiness without relying on the instructions taught by the Tathagata, the Khenpo, and the Acharya is called not relying on others for enlightenment. By "not manifesting the unconditioned," it is shown that even if one understands suchness, one does not abide in its aspect. The unconditioned is nirvana or emptiness. Not manifesting means that even if one understands and attains those, one does not abide in their aspect. In order to show other aspects of being skilled in the conditioned and the unconditioned, it is said, "Furthermore, being skilled in the conditioned," and so on. By "Even if one practices in the three realms, one is not defiled by the afflictions of practicing in the three realms," it is explained that for the benefit of all sentient beings, even if one abides in the three realms, just as a lotus grows from mud but is not defiled by the faults of mud, one is not defiled by attachment, etc., that exist in the three realms. This is called being skilled in the conditioned. Furthermore, "Even if one fully knows the wisdom of definitely emerging from the three realms," the wisdom of definitely emerging from the three realms refers to the wisdom that causes the abandonment of afflictions, the manifestation of abandonment, and the exhaustion of non-arising. "Even if one fully knows" means even if that becomes manifest. "Not falling into the realm of emergence" means that the realm of emergence refers to nirvana. Not falling means not abiding solely in that aspect. In order to extensively explain the eight kinds of skillfulness and to briefly show their definitive words, cause, and effect, it is said, "Whoever is skilled in all dharmas."
