Because they carry, they are called "vehicles." Here, "carrying" refers to carrying to the state of Buddhahood, hence they are called "vehicles." Since it is both a "vehicle" and "great," it is the "Great Vehicle," because it possesses the seven characteristics of "greatness." The seven characteristics of greatness are: great Dharma, great aspiration, great intention, great faith, great accumulation, great time, and great attainment. Because there are immeasurable Sutras such as the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom, it is great Dharma. Because of generating the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings, it is great aspiration. Because of having faith in the profound and vast Sutras, it is great faith. Because of attaining the intention of equality between oneself and others, it is great intention. Because in each moment one accumulates immeasurable collections of merit, it is great accumulation. Because one continuously practices for three great countless eons, it is great time. Because one attains the fruit of unsurpassed enlightenment, it is great attainment. Understanding the nature, cause, and result of that vehicle is being skilled in the Great Vehicle. "What is it?" refers to the question. Regarding "the Bodhisattva's skill in the Great Vehicle is inconceivable," the vehicle is what leads to unsurpassed enlightenment. Because countless and immeasurable sentient beings of the past, future, and present attain Buddhahood through that vehicle, that vehicle is immeasurable. Because the vehicle is immeasurable, the wisdom of being skilled in it is also immeasurable, therefore it is said that "skill in the Great Vehicle is inconceivable." Thus, because the Great Vehicle is endless, it is impossible to explain everything, therefore it is said that "therefore only a part of it is explained," meaning only the essential points are explained. That immeasurable Dharma should be understood as having eleven qualities: the quality of generating the mind of enlightenment, the quality of abandoning the obscurations to knowledge and understanding wisdom, the quality of accumulating merit, the quality of pure conduct, the quality of manifest enlightenment, the quality of equal benefit, the quality of surpassing the path of Hearers and ordinary beings, the quality of destroying obstacles, and the quality of afflictions.

I have the merit of abandoning the afflictions of proximity, the merit of perfecting the benefit of oneself and others, and the merit of perfecting the result. This vehicle opens the opportunity for all sentient beings, so it is called immeasurable, thus showing the merit of generating the mind of enlightenment. It opens the opportunity to lead limitless sentient beings to unsurpassed enlightenment and to realize Buddhahood, so it is called opening the opportunity, and this vehicle is also the cause of that. Because sentient beings are immeasurable, this vehicle is also immeasurable. It is immeasurable in two ways: vast and limitless. The roots of virtue to be accomplished accomplish all that is worldly and beyond worldly, so it is vast. All those roots of virtue are limitless because they are to be accomplished for the benefit of sentient beings. Or, when generating the mind of enlightenment, without abandoning any sentient being, one generates the mind to liberate all limitless sentient beings to unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, so it is called opening the opportunity for all sentient beings, and because sentient beings are immeasurable, this vehicle is also immeasurable. This vehicle is given to uncontaminated wisdom, it is without obscurations, thus showing the merit of abandoning the obscurations of knowledge and understanding wisdom. Having abandoned all the obscurations of knowledge, the wisdom that clearly knows the objects of knowledge like an amala fruit in the palm of one's hand is uncontaminated wisdom, and this vehicle is the cause of that wisdom. Because this vehicle enables one to attain wisdom, it is called giving to uncontaminated wisdom. Now, because it is the cause of wisdom without obscurations, this vehicle is also called without obscurations. This vehicle is what all sentient beings rely on, it is the accumulation of the accumulation of merit and all roots of virtue, thus showing the merit of accumulating the cause. Because the accumulation of merit is accumulated in this way, it has the power to become nourishment for the minds of all sentient beings, so it is called what all sentient beings rely on. The accumulation of merit is generosity and discipline, etc. The roots of virtue are non-attachment and non-hatred, etc.
