Birth is suffering. Among these, the increase of disharmonious elements is illness, that is, the disproportion of elements such as earth. Why is illness called suffering? Because it is afflicted by extremely unbearable diseases, just as a great forest is burned by fire, and when it is caught in it, it makes a loud noise when touched by extremely hot flames, so when touched by the fire of suffering, it makes an unbearable loud noise, so it is called suffering. Death is the decay of the senses, which causes the mind and mental factors to not function. When the mind and mental factors do not function, that person is said to be dead. Why is death called suffering? Because when one dies in this way, one is separated from beloved and cherished parents, relatives, friends, etc., and separated from wealth, grain, servants, children, etc., which are difficult to part with, and like a prisoner being unwillingly led to the execution ground, it generates immeasurable suffering, therefore there is no suffering greater than this, so death is suffering. Meeting with the unpleasant is due to the cause of committing unwholesome deeds, and meeting with unpleasant results such as hell beings. Why is meeting with the unpleasant called suffering? Just like an unfriendly neighbor, it is the nature of causing harm; like a poisonous tree, it is the cause of generating suffering; like a thorn piercing, it causes harm to body and mind; just as hatred arises when people meet with unfriendly people and enemies, it is a place for generating hatred, so it is called suffering. Separation from the beloved, whether belonging to the category of sentient beings or not, is separation from pleasant things. Why is separation from the beloved called suffering? Because the worry of separation from the beloved, seeing or remembering, also produces sorrow, lamentation, displeasure, and the suffering of confusion, so separation from the beloved is suffering. Seeking what is desired and not finding it is wanting not to be separated from suffering, and also wanting not to be separated from happiness.

Seeking it is not achieved. Or, wanting to encounter pleasant things and wanting to be separated from unpleasant things, but not encountering pleasant things and instead encountering unpleasant things, this is called seeking what is desired but not finding it. Why is seeking what is desired but not finding it suffering? Because it is the cause of arising suffering. Because in the three times—past, present, and future—what I seek is not found, therefore suffering arises. In short, the five aggregates of clinging are called suffering because all suffering is gathered in the five aggregates of clinging, and it is the basis of suffering, so it is said. Regarding the phrase "realizing that all phenomena are without self," all phenomena refer to conditioned phenomena, unconditioned phenomena, defiled phenomena, and undefiled phenomena. Knowing where what is non-existent, is realizing that all phenomena are without self, that is, understanding that the permanent self conceived by non-Buddhists does not exist in these phenomena. Regarding the phrase "rejoicing in the peace of nirvana," nirvana is the abandonment of suffering, and because of abandoning afflictions such as desire, it is peace. Alternatively, there are two types of nirvana: nirvana with remainder and nirvana without remainder. Among them, "peace" refers to nirvana with remainder, because all afflictions have been abandoned, and only the aggregates remain. And "nirvana" refers to nirvana without remainder, because both afflictions and aggregates have been abandoned. Rejoicing is to have faith in attaining it and wanting to attain it. The phrase "not wanting to be born in existence even for a moment" is a synonym for not wanting to be born in the three realms at all. Why? Because all three realms are seen as always connected with and pervaded by the suffering of conditioning. The phrase "always seeing as fearful," here also should be connected with the word "existence," because seeing it as having the suffering of suffering or as the place where afflictions arise, therefore always seeing it as fearful. The phrase "always distrusting," here also should be connected with the word "existence," the momentary pleasures, etc.

Also, because it later becomes the cause of suffering, and is endowed with the suffering of change, it is always untrustworthy. To perceive the aggregates as slaughter means that, just as an executioner slaughters and causes suffering, if one clings to the aggregates as self, one will also see the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death arising. Therefore, one perceives those aggregates as slaughter. To regard the elements as being like poisonous snakes means that, just as poisonous snakes cause suffering and afflictions, by relying on the elements such as the eye, and focusing on the elements such as form, one understands that afflictions such as attachment, hatred, and anger arise. Therefore, it is called regarding the elements as being like poisonous snakes. To perceive the sense bases as being like empty villages means that, just as in empty villages people travel and do not stay, so the twelve sense bases are merely name and form. Because one realizes that there is no self or what belongs to self, it is called perceiving the sense bases as being like empty villages. To have the perception of not desiring all places of birth means that there are four places of birth: womb-born, miraculously born, egg-born, and moisture-born. If one is born, one sees that birth arises from its causes, as well as the suffering of aging, sickness, and death, and so on. Therefore, one does not wish to be born in those places of birth, nor does one seek birth, and so it is called the perception of not desiring. There are also two ways of regarding the place of antidote as a quality: as that which has become the support of the bliss of liberation, and as viewing it as having transcended samsara and abandoned all suffering. For example, nirvana is the antidote to samsara. Because one regards nirvana as the support of all the bliss of liberation, it is called perceiving nirvana as a dwelling place. To regard that very thing as having transcended samsara and abandoned all suffering is therefore to perceive it as refuge. After teaching the vehicle of the Hearers, in order to teach the vehicle of the Solitary Buddhas, therefore it was said, "Among them, who is the Bodhisattva who is skilled in the vehicle of the Solitary Buddhas?" and so on.
