This is to explain the merits. Like this, if one sees the rituals and enjoyments of others are perfect, then those who do not believe will become believers, and those who believe will further increase their faith. Fearing even the slightest fault, and mastering oneself by correctly taking up the precepts and studying these two, one speaks of the merits of discipline. Why? Because for the precepts that are correctly taken up, there is not even a dust-like fault, and by taking up and studying the great precepts, there is no chance of being born in the lower realms, and one will also obtain what has not been obtained, and so on. This shows that one should diligently cultivate the place of samadhi. Like this, relying on discipline, one can greatly touch upon one-pointedness of mind. Therefore, it is also said in the scriptures: "Having perfected the aggregate of discipline, one can perfect the aggregate of samadhi." So, what is samadhi? Here, a monk, secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing investigation and analysis, the first dhyana with joy and bliss born of seclusion, having diligently cultivated, abides. He is free from investigation and analysis, his inner being is completely pacified, the stream of his mind becomes one, without investigation, without analysis, the second dhyana with joy and bliss born of samadhi, having diligently cultivated, abides. He is free from attachment to joy, abides in equanimity, possessing mindfulness and awareness. The body experiences happiness, the noble ones say that he is possessing mindfulness, abiding in happiness, in a state of equanimity. The third dhyana without joy, having diligently cultivated, abides. He has abandoned happiness, and also abandoned previous suffering, since pleasure and displeasure have also vanished, neither happiness nor suffering, through equanimity and completely pure mindfulness, the fourth dhyana, having diligently cultivated, abides, this is called samadhi. These dhyanas are classified in four ways: causing the unfavorable aspects to decline, cultivating the antidote, the benefits of cultivation, and the place of both. Regarding this,
