The term "knowing as it is" means understanding that the causes and conditions of enlightenment are without inherent existence, or that ignorance causes the arising of formations, etc., understanding that the aforementioned conditions are without inherent existence. The statement "not abiding in the wisdom of exhaustion and cessation for the sake of observing sentient beings" means that, having realized the emptiness of the thus-gone one's nirvana, one does not abide solely in nirvana for the benefit of sentient beings. In order to explain the meaning of dependent origination, the wise one who is skilled in the three times is taught, and wishing to explain as it is taught, it is asked: What is a Bodhisattva's skill in the three times? These three times are not three aspects of time itself, but the three times are established in relation to the mind and mental factors. Those things of mind and mental factors themselves, together with their causes and effects, have passed away and decayed, which is called the past time; that which has not yet arisen with causes and effects is called the future time; that which has arisen with causes and effects and has not yet decayed is called the present time. To be skilled in what the past, future, and present things are like is called being skilled in the three times. In order to show the skill in the past time, it is said, "Whatever I and other sentient beings," etc., whatever mind and mental factors are related to virtue and non-virtue are called virtuous and non-virtuous minds and mental factors. I and other sentient beings have done such and such virtue in the past, and have done such and such non-virtue, and not forgetting the virtue and non-virtue done by myself and others is recollection. If you ask whether that alone is skill in the past time, in order to show that it is not, it is said, "The non-virtuous mind and mental factors," etc., which should also be connected with the recollection of the mind and mental factors related to the non-virtue of myself and others. What is called dedicating to enlightenment means praying that all the virtues done may become the cause of attaining unsurpassed enlightenment. In order to show the skill in the future time, it is said, "Whatever future mind and mental factors," etc.

It is said: In the future, my accumulation of merit and wisdom, becoming the cause of attaining unsurpassed Bodhi, becoming the condition that benefits self and others, the roots of virtue must be done, thinking like this is definitely paying attention to the accumulation of roots of virtue. In order to show that meaning, it is said "Bodhi manifests the karma of thought", meaning, thinking about doing the virtuous karma that can attain Bodhi is thinking about the karma of Bodhi manifestation. In order to clearly show what that meaning is like, it is said "What are those who generate my virtuous mind" and so on. The mind related to virtue is the virtuous mind. The generator refers to the virtuous mind that has already arisen in the present. What will arise is that in the future, the mind related to virtue will inevitably arise. They refer to the virtuous mind itself in two periods, meaning the virtuous mind that arises now and those that will arise in the future. The word "is" indicates that those virtues are not dedicated to the Two Vehicles and the good destinies of humans and gods. Bodhi refers to the purpose of attaining Bodhi. "Not dividing time" means not dividing the time when future unwholesome minds and mental factors arise. In order to summarize and show the meaning mentioned above, it is said "Whoever teaches the mind like this is" and so on. Teaching the mind like this means that from now on, the virtuous mind that arises and the virtuous mind that will arise in the future must be dedicated to Bodhi, without distinguishing the time when future unwholesome minds and mental factors arise, like this from then on teaching the mind and dwelling in the mind, that is the meaning. In order to show proficiency in the time of present arising, it is said "What is proficiency in present arising" and so on, meaning, not doing virtuous roots such as non-attachment, not entering unwholesome roots such as attachment, is proper attention.
