This, which does not arise from autonomy and an agent, prevents the assertion of a discordant cause. The word "arising" refers to the uninterrupted generation between cause and effect, and this prevents the assertion of non-existence. Why is dependent origination taught? It is taught in order to show that these beings arise from the condition of ignorance, and do not arise from discordant causes or causelessness. Alternatively, in order to dispel the delusion of entering into cyclic existence and the delusion of turning away from cyclic existence, dependent origination is taught, with its two aspects of arising in accordance with the proper order and contrary to the proper order. Among these, the delusion of entering into cyclic existence is the ignorance of the cause by which one will be born in cyclic existence. In order to dispel that ignorance, it is said, "From the arising of inappropriate attention, ignorance arises." Turning away from cyclic existence is nirvana. In order to dispel the ignorance of the cause by which one is liberated from cyclic existence and attains nirvana, it is said, "From the cessation of inappropriate attention, ignorance ceases," and so forth. Among these, the arising of dependent origination in accordance with the proper order should also be understood as having four aspects: the aspect of distinguishing the limbs, the aspect of collecting the limbs, the aspect of collecting the pervasive afflictions of the limbs, and the aspect of selflessness arising from conditions. Beginning with the aspect of distinguishing the limbs, it is said, "For example, from the arising of inappropriate attention, ignorance arises," and so forth. The word "for example" is either leading the beginning of the sentence or placed as a particle in the sentence. Among these, perceiving permanence in impermanence, perceiving happiness in suffering, perceiving purity in impurity, and perceiving self in selflessness is inappropriate attention. "From arising" means that from the complete arising of inappropriate attention, ignorance arises; it is the meaning that ignorance completely arises. Here, the mention of inappropriate attention is stated in order to show the cause of ignorance, and the meaning of "arising" should be similarly applied to the remaining factors.

To perceive as singular what is not, to perceive as whole what is fragmented, to perceive as permanent what is impermanent, to perceive as stable what is unstable, to perceive as enduring what is transient, and to perceive as pleasurable what is suffering – this is called ignorance. If one considers as a single entity what is produced by the aggregation of many different and dissimilar elements such as earth, water, fire, wind, and space, this is perceiving as singular. Since those elements such as earth also arise from different subtle particles, to consider them as a single entity is perceiving as whole. Since each moment is impermanent and changes into something different, one clings to the notion of "I" even while it is changing, and thinks that the self remains the same – this is perceiving as permanent. To perceive as arising from something existent what actually arises from nothing is perceiving as stable. Alternatively, to think of all these things as real entities when they are actually insubstantial like illusions is perceiving as stable. To cling to the notion that what arises and then ceases will, like a clay bird, transmigrate to a future time is perceiving as enduring. Since the three realms and all compounded phenomena are tormented by the fire of the three kinds of suffering and are full of suffering, to cling to one aspect as having the nature of goodness and pleasure is perceiving as pleasurable. Thus, due to pervasive delusion, the performance of various actions through body, speech, and mind is called formation (འདུ་བྱེད་). Alternatively, there are three types of formation: formations tending towards non-merit, formations tending towards merit, and formations tending towards immovability. Those who are attached to committing sinful actions, who are deluded about other lives, actions, and the fruits of actions, and who generally ignorantly view them as non-existent, are manifestly forming non-meritorious actions. Those who are bewildered by ignorance, who view existence and the enjoyment of existence as virtues, and who perceive them as pleasurable, are manifestly forming meritorious actions. Due to ignorance, those meditations in which one clings to the taste of absorption, and in which craving, views, and pride are predominant, are manifestly forming immovable actions. Therefore, from the arising of ignorance comes the arising of formation. Thus, in the mother's womb, at the very first moment, entering into…
