Understanding the nature of what is known is to thoroughly comprehend the establishment, and to thoroughly comprehend the established dharma. Understanding that all the four noble truths, which are established in name and meaning, are not real but temporarily established, is called thoroughly understanding the temporary arising. This is at the stage of heat. The appearance of all things as if there were a grasper and a grasped, when in fact they do not exist, is the appearance of reality. The cause of these appearances is mind and mental factors, therefore mind and mental factors are the reason for the appearance. Understanding that the appearance of the grasper and the grasped appears to the mind and mental factors is called thoroughly understanding the reason for the appearance of reality. This is at the stage of the peak. Meaning refers to external objects such as form. Understanding that these do not exist is called understanding the non-perception of meaning. This is at the stage of patience. Thus, if the grasped does not exist, the grasper will not arise either, therefore understanding that there is no mind that grasps external objects is called thoroughly understanding the non-perception of the object. This is at the stage of the supreme worldly dharma. Thus, when both the grasper and the grasped are not perceived, and the suchness of the meaning that pervades all is realized, this is called thoroughly understanding the realm of dharma. This is at the time of the path of seeing. Thus, at the time of the path of seeing, the noble Hearers abandon the obscuration of afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, and thereby thoroughly understand the selflessness of persons. Bodhisattvas abandon the coarse aspects of the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge to be abandoned by seeing, and thereby understand both the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, the noble Hearers only understand the selflessness of persons, and because they enter for their own benefit, it is called thoroughly understanding the small intention. Bodhisattvas understand the selflessness of persons and phenomena, and because they enter for the benefit of themselves and others, their understanding is called thoroughly understanding the intention of the great essence. At the time of the first ground, comprehending the suchness of all dharmas, this is how dharma is comprehended. Having thus comprehended, the qualities of the comprehended dharma are comprehended.

Understanding these is how to comprehend the Dharma, which is called being skilled in understanding the distinctions of the Dharma. Then, one correctly establishes the Dharma to be meditated upon in the mind, and at the time of the path of meditation, understanding the Dharma and qualities to be meditated upon is called being skilled in understanding the distinctions of the Dharma. In what way does one approach the two? That is, approaching the finite letters and approaching the infinite names and sentences; approaching in this way is knowing how to approach. Thus, counting, measuring, seeking, understanding, and approaching, these five aspects are the noble path. Knowing in this way is called the noble truth of knowing the path as the path. In order to summarize and show the meanings that have been explained, it is said, "Entering into what kind of true knowledge," and so on. Entering into true knowledge is realizing the emptiness of the four truths explained above. The statement "also not abiding in true knowledge" means that one should not abide solely on the side of how one realizes emptiness, but also consider the benefit of sentient beings. After explaining being skilled in the truth, the explanation of being skilled in dependent origination is shown. Wishing to explain as it was shown, the question is asked, "What is a Bodhisattva's skill in dependent origination?" The meaning of "that" is the same as mentioned above. Relying on cause and condition, the result arises simultaneously, which is dependent origination. Being skilled in that is being skilled in dependent origination. This shows that truly understanding the characteristics of dependent origination without error is being skilled in dependent origination. Therefore, the three words "reliance," "relation," and "arising" are used to negate three aspects. The three aspects are: asserting no cause, asserting dissimilar causes, and asserting non-existence. Among them, the word "reliance" means arising in dependence on cause and condition, so this negates asserting no cause. The word "relation" refers to similarity; cause and effect arise from similarity, not from dissimilarity. For example, action arises from ignorance.
