By truly engaging in the sole practice, one thoroughly understands the ultimate truth. By comprehending the characteristics of both self and others, one thoroughly understands the truth of characteristics, so it is said. Here, intending to explain the conventional truth, (the text says:) "Whatever is expressed by worldly terms, letters, sounds, and symbols," here the word "whatever" is connected to all words, that is, connected to "whatever worldly terms," "whatever is expressed by letters," "whatever is expressed by sounds," and "whatever is expressed by symbols." The word "whatever" means extracting how much there is, that is, the term for how many worldly terms there are. Among them, worldly terms are what is to be expressed. The rest is explanation, letters refer to those related to the scriptural authority of A and Ka, etc. Sounds refer to the phrases such as "all conditioned things are impermanent" related to the scriptural authority. Symbols refer to the phrases that can show meaning and can be understood. It is not just the scriptural authority of the word "whatever," but also includes how many letters and sounds, etc., there are in the world. These are expressed in two ways, through mind and speech. Among them, expressing through mind is like how Indra taught Abhidharma through mind, and they also established their own doubts in their minds, and also answered with verses of mind. It is like what appears in those sutras. Expressing through speech refers to the various kinds of verbal expressions that enter the ears of the listeners. They say in short: For the sake of taming sentient beings to be tamed, all the expressed terms are the conventional truth. Thus, in the Sutra of the Jewel Cloud, it is also said: Noble son, possessing ten qualities, a Bodhisattva is skilled in the conventional truth. What are the ten? For example, one establishes form, but in the ultimate sense, one neither clings to nor is attached to form. Similarly, one establishes feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, but in the ultimate sense, one neither clings to nor is attached to consciousness, this is the Dharma of the Buddha.

They are also established as mothers, etc. But in terms of ultimate truth, they are neither apprehended nor do they appear as the Dharma of the Buddha. They are also established as Bodhi, but they are neither apprehended nor do they appear as Bodhisattvas. Son of good family, therefore, names and establishments, as well as terms, are called conventional truth. Because there is no ultimate truth in conventional dharmas, and without conventional dharmas, the ultimate truth cannot be shown. Thus it is said. The opposite of this is the ultimate truth. In order to show it, (it is said in the sutra): The ultimate truth is that which has no movement of mind, what need is there to mention letters? The ultimate truth is birth and non-birth, thinkable and unthinkable, permanent and impermanent, speakable and unspeakable, cessation and non-cessation, knowable and unknowable, permanent and impermanent, etc. Because it transcends all elaborations, it is said that there is no movement of mind. That is to say, it transcends the objects of mind and mental factors. Because the ultimate truth and its awareness-wisdom are non-dual, it is not even an object of mind, what need is there to mention letters? This is the concluding statement. Therefore, it is also said in the *Ratnamegha Sutra*: Son of good family, those who possess ten qualities are skilled in the ultimate truth of Bodhisattvas. What are the ten? They are: those who possess the nature of non-birth. The nature of non-cessation, the nature of non-destruction, the nature of non-taking and non-rejecting, the nature of completely transcending the realm of words, the nature of unspeakable, the nature of non-elaboration, the nature of unutterable, and so on. Thus it is said. Among them, in order to explain the truth of characteristics, (someone) asked from the heart: What is the truth of characteristics? (It is said in the sutra): The truth of characteristics is that all characteristics are one characteristic. That is to say, for example, the characteristic of earth is hardness, the characteristic of water is wetness, and from this onwards, the characteristic of form is having obstruction, the characteristic of feeling is experiencing, etc. All of these are one characteristic, because they are the same in the characteristic of suchness.
