There are two kinds of birthplaces: the birthplace of the noble ones and the birthplace of the non-noble ones. Among them, those who are far away from all afflictions and have abandoned them are the noble ones. The gateway through which these noble ones are born and arise is called the birthplace of the noble ones. Therefore, it is also said in the sutras: What is a noble one? It is one who has completely abandoned desire, completely abandoned hatred, and completely abandoned ignorance. Those who have not abandoned afflictions are the non-noble ones, and the gateway through which they are born and arise is called the birthplace of the non-noble ones. Therefore, it is said in the sutras: What is an ordinary being? It is one who has not attained the Dharma of the noble ones, who thinks with wrong thoughts, performs evil deeds, and speaks evil words. In order to explain what the gateway through which the noble ones are born and arise is, it is said: The birthplace of the noble ones is the correct practice of the path. That is, relying on a virtuous friend to listen to the Dharma, establishing and contemplating what is heard, and relying on the union of calm abiding and insight to practice. First, practice the four mindfulnesses, then practice the four right abandonments when the warmth arises, then practice the four legs of miraculous power at the peak, then practice the five faculties at the stage of forbearance, and from here, practice the five powers at the peak of worldly Dharma, then practice the seven branches of enlightenment on the path of seeing, and then practice the eightfold noble path on the path of cultivation, which is called the practice of the path. Because the noble ones are born and arise from the practice of the path, the practice of the path is the birthplace of the noble ones. In order to explain the gateway through which the non-noble ones are born and arise, it is said: The birthplace of the non-noble ones is that which is not in accordance with the path. That is, not listening to the Dharma from a virtuous friend, not entering into contemplation or practice, which is called not being in accordance with the path. Or, practicing calm abiding and insight in a reversed way, these people will not become noble ones, so they are called the birthplace of the non-noble ones. Or, there are ten kinds of minds that are not in accordance with the path. What are these ten? A mind that is extremely blazing.

And, sentient beings who have fallen into the hands of enemies, sentient beings tormented by suffering, sentient beings obscured by darkness, sentient beings who have entered evil paths, sentient beings who possess great bondage, sentient beings who are attached to supreme food mixed with poison, sentient beings who have completely lost their way, sentient beings who have entered wrong paths, and weak sentient beings. Among them, the extremely burning sentient beings are those who are attached to the pleasure of desire. Sentient beings who have fallen into the hands of enemies are those who engage in virtue but are obstructed by demons and abandon virtue. Sentient beings tormented by suffering are those sentient beings in hell realms. Sentient beings obscured by darkness are those who are deeply engaged in wrongdoings such as hunting, because they are intoxicated by the ripening of karma. Sentient beings who have entered evil paths are those who are of a nature that cannot transcend complete suffering, because the path of samsara never ceases. Sentient beings who possess great bondage are the non-Buddhists who are bound by strong bonds of various views and have entered the wrong path to liberation. Sentient beings who are attached to supreme food mixed with poison are those who are attached to the bliss of meditative absorption. Just as delicious food mixed with poison is pleasant at first but becomes the cause of death, so too, attachment to the taste of samadhi will eventually lead to falling away from it. Sentient beings who have lost their way are those who are arrogant, because they have lost the path to liberation. Sentient beings who have entered wrong paths are those of uncertain lineage who have entered the path of the Lesser Vehicle. Weak sentient beings are bodhisattvas who are unable to perfect the two accumulations, which is called being incompatible with the path. Because they are incompatible with the path, they cannot immediately become noble ones, therefore they are not the source of noble ones. Among them, "when a bodhisattva abides in the path" means abiding in the path described above. "Generating great compassion for sentient beings who practice in a way that is incompatible with the path" means generating great compassion for the ten kinds of sentient beings who abide in a way that is incompatible with the path. "Not abandoning the source of the path" means from the source of the path
