The knowledge of distinct objects is consciousness, which is the eight consciousnesses such as eye consciousness. The aggregate of consciousness is like an illusion. Why? Because it is impermanent. For example, a clever man, with the guise of illusion, conjures up various illusions of gods, humans, yakshas, and animals. One looks at them with the eyes and hopes that they are of inherent nature and permanent, but seeing that they are without inherent nature and immediately perish, one thinks, "Alas! This is an illusion, it is emptiness without inherent nature." Similarly, the aggregate of consciousness transformed by various karmic imprints, with the eye of wisdom, hoping that it is inherently permanent, observing it with the nature of one and many, like an illusion, one sees that it is emptiness without inherent nature, perishing moment by moment. The aggregates are like a dream. What is said is that the five aggregates mentioned above are also like a dream. Why? Because meaningless things also become objects of experience, and one experiences all that is pleasant and unpleasant. For example, various consciousnesses cannot enter into objects, because of the dullness of sleep, so the flow of various thoughts arises, which is a dream. For example, a dream is not of my own nature, nor is it the nature between sentient beings. Although there are no things, when seeing objects that become pleasant and unpleasant, various minds of pleasure and displeasure arise. Similarly, the aggregates are not of my own nature, so they are not the nature between sentient beings. Although there are no things, by the cause of various virtuous and non-virtuous actions, happiness and suffering of heavens and bad destinies arise. The aggregates are like an echo. What is said is that the aggregates are like an echo. Why? Because although there are no things, various names and words can be uttered. For example, the echo image in sound is not of my own nature, nor is it the nature between sentient beings. Although there are no things and it is meaningless, various sounds arise, just like that.

Indeed, all dharmas are selfless and peaceful in nature, but there are also many expressions of names, words, and terms that are like sounds and images. The so-called 'aggregates are like illusions' means that various patterns are drawn on paper, cloth, or silk, then stretched and installed, and when a lamp is lit inside at night, various images appear, which is called illusion. Or it is called an image, that is, under the sunlight in the house, one or more images appear. Or, appearing from one place to another, this is called illusion, such as mistaking a tree for a person. Aggregates are like illusions, why is this said? Because even if it is meaningless, various images will appear during an illusion performance, and similarly, even if it is meaningless, various minds and mental factors of the three realms will arise and appear in various forms. The so-called 'aggregates are like reflections' means that aggregates are like reflections, why is this said? Because even if it is meaningless, it will become the object of meditation for those who are attached to reality. For example, the moon in the water, and the image of the face appearing in a clear mirror, from the nature of non-self to the nature of non-personal self, even if there is ultimately no entity, it is only an appearance, similarly, the nature of meditation and so on, and the aggregates of yogis, are also not the nature of self, therefore they are also not the nature of personal self, although there is no entity and the nature is invisible, but, just like images appear from the ocean-like mind abiding in equanimity, various liberations, forms, and emanations will also arise and appear. The so-called 'aggregates are like emanations' means that aggregates are like emanations, why is this said? Because even if it is meaningless, Bodhisattvas will appear to take birth in order to accomplish the deeds of all sentient beings without reversing their thoughts. For example, various emanations of gods and humans are not the nature of self, therefore they are also not the nature of personal self, although there is no entity, various images and shapes will appear.
