Vala! Apprehending objects as signs is the aggregate of perception. Objects are forms, sounds, and so on. Signs are white, red, and so on. Apprehending is determining, "This is white, not red." The aggregate of perception is like a mirage. Why? Because it is selfless and insignificant. For example, a person who desires water, scorched by the sun in springtime, sees various mirages like waves of water, appearing high to the eye, and thinking they are water, runs to them to drink. But upon approaching, they see that it is not water and exclaim, "Alas! This is a mirage, selfless, empty, without essence." Similarly, looking at the aggregate of perception, with its various inverted and numerous conceptualizations, with the eye of wisdom, if one accurately examines existence and non-existence, and so on, one will see selflessness and insubstantiality. Therefore, perception is also like a mirage, not the nature of self, and not even the nature of a person. The aggregates of formations are like plantain trees. Performing various actions, such as virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral actions, is formation. That is, the collection of various formations. The aggregates of formations are like plantain trees. Why? Because they have no heartwood. For example, someone who wants the heartwood of a tree cuts down a plantain tree, gradually peels it from the leaves, and then examines it with their eyes to see if there is any heartwood. If they do not see any heartwood, they exclaim, "Alas! This is the heartwood of a plantain tree, emptiness, insubstantiality, and without essence." Similarly, hoping for essence and heartwood in the various aggregates of formations, such as virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral actions, looking at them comprehensively with the eye of wisdom, if one accurately examines existence and non-existence, one and many, self and other, and the combination of the two, one will see mind-only and non-arising, and transcending existence and non-existence, without heartwood like a plantain tree, separated from the nature of self. The aggregate of consciousness is like an illusion, regarding forms and so on.
