What is the distinction of the characteristics of causes and conditions? "External cause is seed, etc." Thus it is said. Then, what is the external dependent arising that has causes? After saying that, it is like this: from seed comes sprout, from sprout comes leaf, from leaf comes stem, from stem comes node, from node comes pith, from pith comes flower, from flower comes fruit. Thus it is said. "Conditions are shown as six kinds." Because it is the occasion, it is combined with the external dependent arising. The six kinds are the six kinds such as earth. Therefore it is said: "Seed sprout stem etc., how to say reaching fruit?" If seed exists, then sprout and stem etc. all that reach fruit will arise; if seed does not exist, then sprout and stem etc. all that reach fruit will not arise. Therefore, seed also does not think 'I have accomplished sprout etc.' Sprout etc. also do not think 'I am accomplished by seed etc.' Flower also does not think 'I have accomplished fruit', until fruit also does not think 'I am accomplished by flower.' However, if seed exists, then fruit etc. will arise from sprout etc.; if it does not exist, it will not arise. Therefore, the external dependent arising should be regarded as related to cause. Condition is earth etc., until time, in order. "Then, how to view the condition related to external dependent arising?" Thus it is said. If asked "How should the six kinds of conditions related to external dependent arising be viewed?", it is answered: "Because the six elements are assembled." What are the six? Earth, water, fire, wind, space, and time, assembled in order, therefore know that the external dependent arising is the condition, in order, just like the order. Then, among these causes and conditions, what is the function of which?

Furthermore, it is said: Reliance and moisture and ripening, Seed increase and opening, Changes, etc., are by those, Actions enter as they are. Among them, the earth element performs the function of relying on seeds, and is called the firmness itself because it relies on the seeds to manifest towards the growth of sprouts. The water element performs the function of moistening, and is said to be the function of softening. The fire element performs the function of ripening, and is called complete ripening because the warmth of mutual contact arises in the stage of near complete growth. The wind element performs the function of increasing, because it is for the sake of increasing, arising from its own stage and carrying outwards. The wind element performs the function of increasing seeds, which is for the sake of increasing. The space element performs the function of not obscuring seeds and sprouts, etc., and is called the space element because it does not obstruct and enters in accordance, so it performs the function of not obscuring seeds and sprouts, etc. Time performs the function of changing seeds, and is called time because it also accomplishes all aspects completely, and changes as time does, so it performs the function of changing seeds. If everything is complete without lack, then it arises; if it is incomplete, then it does not arise. Therefore, it is said: If the conditions do not gather, Even if there are seeds, there are no sprouts, etc. If the seeds themselves do not exist, Even if there are conditions, it is the same. Therefore, it is said: When all gather and the seed ceases, then it will be manifestly accomplished from that. Causes and such conditions, Are free from self-grasping, etc., Causes and conditions are from gathering, The fruit of karma is not in vain. Among them, the earth element does not think, "I will do the work of hardening." Likewise, water, fire, wind, space, and time do not think this way, because there is no self-grasping or grasping of self. Establishing the fruit of karma is not in vain, and one should understand that it arises from all causes and conditions being complete without lack. That sprout also, is called the sprout, etc., that arises from the cause of the seed.

Sarvanah (everything), not born from itself, nor from others, not from both, nor from the maker's time, likewise,自在 etc. are also not made, not from nature, nor from no cause, thus it is said. Self-born means that things are born from themselves without causes and conditions. Those who speak of self-nature think and say like this: The self-nature of things, this is the one that always abides, there is no birth in it, nor will it become a little bit of destruction. The splendor of peacock feathers, the extreme redness of lotuses, the sharpness of thorns, etc., who made them before? Therefore, in order to refute their doctrine, it is said that things cannot be born from themselves, because they have already existed. If one admits to having birth, then one has already promised cause and condition. Therefore, things cannot be born from their own self-nature, because they have birth, like vases, etc. According to whose view, things always abide, according to that view, birth, action, karma, dwelling, and destruction are also unreasonable, but birth, action, karma, dwelling, and destruction are also visible. Therefore, this fault will become a fault, so it is said that it is not born from itself, that is, if things are born from themselves, then it will become the fault of always being born. Like the sky, there is nothing at all, and it will never be born or destroyed anywhere? The answer is: Because it contradicts the visible, thus things appear to be born from cause and condition. Thus, for the time being, things are not born from their own self-nature. Other-born means born from itself. Is there a self that can give birth to others and destroy others? It is said that all things inside and outside are the merits of the self, and the self exists as the inner maker, and if it exists, there will be walking, light, movement, thinking, dispelling, arrogance, action, karma, and the nature of itself and others. Eyes, etc. are the merits of the self, because they are the meaning of others, like the limbs of bedding, etc., it is said. The voice of others means that it belongs to me. Eyes etc.
