Bhiksus. Sariputra heard, meaning he heard from the Blessed One. Therefore, it is said in the sutra: At that time, the venerable Sariputra, Bodhisattva Mahasattva, indicated where Maitreya was going, etc. Going to Maitreya's place means that the Bodhisattva Maitreya always abides in that place, going there and going. Both of them were settled on the stone slab. Then, the venerable Sariputra said to the Bodhisattva Maitreya: Maitreya, now the Tathagata, without separating the meanings of what was said, remains silent, how can one understand the meaning? He said such words. Saying Maitreya now, etc., to the monks, the Blessed One taught by the example of the young Sala tree, what is the meaning of the sutra spoken by Maitreya Sugata? The Blessed One also did not separate the meaning, and all the meanings of the omniscient realm also exceeded the realm of all Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, what is dependent origination? What is Dharma? What is the Buddha? And so on. Therefore, the author of the sutra, combining the sutra, said: What is dependent origination and Dharma? What is the Buddha? It is said that in any case, if one sees dependent origination, one sees Dharma. Seeing Dharma means seeing the Buddha, meaning: If one sees dependent origination, one sees Dharma and Buddha. Sariputra said to Maitreya: Please speak of my doubts. The venerable Sariputra arose that doubt, therefore he spoke to Maitreya. Maitreya means Maitreya. What kind of characteristics does Maitreya have? Maitreya is the master of extreme practice. Maitreya spoke of determination. Because of having Maitreya's samadhi and abiding extremely, Maitreya is the master of extreme practice. Determination means certainty. Spoke means to say. To whom did he speak? He spoke to Sariputra. What did he say? He said the Blessed One here, etc. Bhiksus, who dependent origination, etc., for dependent origination

What is arising? For example, due to ignorance, actions arise; due to actions, consciousness arises; due to consciousness, name and form arise; due to name and form, the six sense sources arise; due to the six sense sources, contact arises; due to contact, feeling arises; due to feeling, craving arises; due to craving, grasping arises; due to grasping, becoming arises; due to becoming, birth arises; due to birth, aging and death arise; due to aging and death, sorrow and, lamentation, suffering and, distress and, agitation arise. Thus, this great mass of suffering alone arises. This is what the Bhagavan said about dependent origination. The term 'dependent origination' refers to that which has a cause and, has conditions, and not to that which is without a cause and, without conditions. Therefore, it is called dependent origination. Furthermore, how should one understand the order of arising of these limbs of existence, such as ignorance? What is their characteristic? What is their function? What are they? It is said: In this regard, dependent origination should be understood as arising for two reasons. What are the two? It is said: They are related to cause and, related to condition. Dependent origination is also divided into two types due to the difference between internal and external. How so? It is said: From a seed, a sprout grows until a fruit is produced. If there is a seed, a sprout will grow and a fruit will be produced. If there is no seed, a sprout will not grow, until a fruit will not be produced. The seed also does not think, 'I have accomplished the sprout.' The sprout also does not think, 'I have been accomplished by the seed,' until the flower also does not think, 'I have accomplished the fruit.' The fruit also does not think, 'My sprout has been accomplished by the flower,' until the end. However, if there is a seed, it will grow from sprout to fruit. Therefore, external dependent origination should be viewed as related to conditions. External

How should one view external dependent arising in relation to conditions and causes? It is said: Because the six elements are assembled. What are these six elements? They are earth and so on, and the seasons. Thus, external dependent arising should be viewed in relation to conditions and causes. If asked, what benefit does the seed receive from earth and so on, that it is considered a causal condition? Earth and so on perform the functions of holding, moistening, warming, nourishing, not obscuring, and transforming in sequence. Without these, it will not transform. When the conditions are not incomplete, when everything is assembled, it will transform from that into that. Earth and so on do not think, 'We should perform the functions of holding the seed and so on.' The seed also does not think, 'I have been benefited by these conditions through the actions of holding and so on.' However, if there is earth and so on, sprouts and so on will arise from the seed; if not, it will not arise. Therefore, the author of the sutra said: The twelve branches, ignorance and so on, reach death in sequence. Among the branches of existence, which have ignorance and so on reaching death? Those are the branches of ignorance and so on reaching death. Therefore, only a mass of suffering arises. 'Therefore' means that ignorance and so on arise in sequence. 'A mass of suffering' means a collection of suffering. 'Only' means being free from self and what belongs to self. 'Arises' means is born. The eightfold path of the Dharma, the result is peaceful nirvana. Thus it is said. Dharma is Dharma because it holds its own characteristics. The eightfold path means wrong view, wrong thought, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, and wrong concentration. Among these, wrong view means wrong view, which is the five views: the view of the aggregates, the extreme view, the view of holding views, the view of holding precepts and vows wrongly, and wrong view. All of these arise from wrong hearing and thinking and so on. Therefore, because of wrong views, one practices the wrong path.
