Flames, hail, wheels of fire, and like dreams, being completely understood, therefore, having severed the habitual defilements of the all-ground consciousness of all afflictions, having completely cut off the unreal conceptualizations, having shot arrows of great compassion, etc., at the host with the banner of the makara, therefore, having defeated the Mara of the son of the gods. Thus, having conquered the four Maras, he is called Bhagavan. It is also said: Having conquered the enemy of the four Maras, arising from the three realms of existence, knowing what has arisen, will arise, and is arising, abiding in existence, this is Bhagavan. Such a Bhagavan resides in Rajagriha (around the 6th century BC, near Patna, Bihar today), on Vulture Peak Mountain (Gijjhakuta). Why is that city called Rajagriha? It is said: That city was previously known as Kushagrapura. When that city was disturbed by non-humans and repeatedly suffered from fires, the king realized this and issued an order: Wise citizens! From now on, whoever's house catches fire first, go to the great charnel ground of the cool forest and build a house and live there! After this order was issued, due to the force of karma, the royal palace caught fire first. The king summoned the ministers and instructed them: Wise ministers, know this! If I myself violate the law that I have established, it is not good for me and is not proper, therefore, wise ministers, today build a royal palace in the great charnel ground of the cool forest and go and live there. Then, everyone acted accordingly to the king's words. Initially, the king went there and established a residence. Then others also established residences, so the name Rajagriha was formed. To the southeast of the great city of Rajagriha, there is a mountain called Vulture Peak Mountain. The mountain whose peak resembles the head of a vulture is called Vulture Peak Mountain. Or, the evil Mara manifested the appearance of vulture meat, intending to steal the Bhagavan's Dharma robes, but due to the blessings of the Bhagavan

could not, and immediately abandoned it. That Dharma garment has now turned into stone, appearing in four layers, looking like a Dharma garment. The nearby mountain that symbolizes this is called Vulture Peak Mountain, and the Thuba (Shakyamuni Buddha) resided on that Vulture Peak Mountain. Was it alone? It is said: No. Many monks and Bodhicitta, Resided with the assembly and the right Dharma. "Many monks" refers to the great Sangha of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks. "Bodhicitta assembly" refers to countless Bodhisattvas, great beings. "Resided" means residing in the four postures of standing, walking, sitting, and lying down. Who is that? It is the Thuba. Thuba, because it possesses the endurance of body, speech, and mind. It endures because body, speech, and mind do not enter (evil paths). What does it not enter? Therefore, it is said: Body, speech, and mind do not enter into misconduct, which shows the meaning of it. Because it possesses endurance, it is Thuba, meaning possessing, like someone with a staff. Furthermore, why are the place, time, and attendants mentioned? It is said: To be in accordance with the Chakravartin king and the Dharma. It is said that the usual behavior of Chakravartin kings is as follows: When they act to embrace Brahmins and householders, etc., they will definitely specify the place where they reside, such as towns and cities. Where is it? In such and such a place. To fully demonstrate their authority, they are with ministers, etc. "Time" refers to the time of morning and evening. To whom? To Brahmins and householders, etc. Therefore, the Bhagavan also, in order to become the supreme Dharma king, the Chakravartin, mentioned the place, time, and attendants, etc. Where is it? In Rajagriha (Royal City). When is it? On a certain morning. With whom? With the Sangha of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks and the Bodhisattvas. To whom? To the monks. What?

What was said? It is the Sutra called "Sālu Green Grove." Again, it was said: Where, by what means, at what time, and for whom was it taught? Having taught those very things, finally, the sound of joy arose. "Having gazed upon the Sālu Green Grove," and so on. "Having gazed upon the Sālu Green Grove" means having gazed. "Arising from cause and condition," means arising from cause and condition, and that which causes this to arise, such as Īśvara, does not exist at all, which is what is meant. Again, it was said: Apart from seeds and so forth, one should not call anything else a cause, because Īśvara and so forth and having no cause are contradictory to direct perception and so forth. Sprouts and so forth arise from seeds, but Īśvara, the chief one, and causal time and so forth are not causes, because they are not perceived by direct perception and inference, like a lotus in the sky. Just as cause and condition arise, the twelve limbs arise in order. Whoever sees this as dependent origination, it was said, sees the Dharma and the Buddha, because they see the twelve limbs of dependent origination, the Dharma that arises from causes and conditions, as being without cause and free from dissimilar causes for monks, nuns, or anyone else who engages in actions and so forth. Having said this to the monks, the guide remained silent. He also declared that the eightfold noble path, the nature of realizing the Dharma of the fruit, Nirvāṇa with remainder, and Nirvāṇa without remainder are seen as they are, and then the Blessed One remained silent. At that time and so forth, it is said that the monk Śāriputra went to the bodhisattva Maitreya and asked this completely. "Having said this" means that Śāriputra, having heard the Sutra from the Blessed One, told it to the monks, that is, having taught it. The name "guide" is for guiding beings by various skillful means. "Remained silent" means remaining in meditative equipoise. "Having heard" said the monk Śāriputra, the name "monk" is for subduing the afflictions.
