Even having increased one's own merits, it is the punishment of a humble and dejected mind. Because one has eaten food that one should not eat, it is said that the body is uncomfortable. No matter what, one wants to obtain, and it is said that one possesses true merits. For the five merits that one wants to pursue, it is to strive to fulfill the wishes. By wishing to eliminate the intention to harm, it is thinking of harming others. The state of not being completely peaceful in body and mind, it is correctly said to be agitation. Regret after doing bad deeds, it is to be very distressed. Dullness is because the body and mind are heavy, so one cannot engage in work. Sleep is the consciousness and senses, gathered together it is called sleep. Clearly without sinful desires and merits, yet pretending to possess merits. Laziness is because one is tired of work, the body and mind are depressed. Greed is extreme craving, exceeding contentment. The unpleasant words that are spoken are words of slander against the Dharma. Disrespectful to the actions of an undisciplined Khenpo Lama. The decline of respect for the Lama, this is like being born. The mind is attached to desires, etc., and losing stability is unhappiness. The conceptualization related to relatives and friends, is the thought of love for relatives and friends. Similarly, attachment to worldly things, in reality, is praising its qualities. Similarly, the thought of not dying, is not doubting the fear of death. Thinking that later (people) have wisdom, no matter what, the thought that one will become a Lama through the way others possess merits. The conceptualization of attachment to others, no matter to whom, with attachment and the intention to harm, arrogance, thinking about what is beneficial and not beneficial. Through the differences of various conceptualizations, no matter in what way, the mind's consciousness entering (the state) is pride. This is a common state. The pride of considering oneself inferior to inferiors, is thinking that one is inferior to those who are inferior to oneself, this is indeed (a kind of) pride. Inferior people and oneself, thinking that they are equal is also pride, the thought that one is superior to those who are inferior to oneself, this is also pride. Equal people and oneself thinking that they are equal, this is the pride of equality. Considering superiors and oneself as equal, is excessive pride. The thought that one is superior to superiors, is pride that is even greater than pride. No matter where, thinking that oneself is unnecessary, this is inferior pride. End

Thus, the deluded grasping, The five aggregates are held as self, Those who are conceited, That is said to be pride. Meditation and its fruit, Not attained, yet claiming to have attained, Such delusion, Is called excessive pride. With mind attached to the wrong path, To an undesired result, Holding it as a real deed, That is called wrong pride. Differentiated thoughts and consciousness, Obscured by the darkness of attachment and aversion, Towards the Truth and the Three Jewels, The two minds are doubtful. These are the near afflictions, Fifty-seven in total, Arising from subtle sources, Those who desire liberation should abandon them. This is the sixteenth chapter, on stating the faults of the near afflictions, from Entering the Path of the Conquerors. These dharmas of no-self, Those who understand, together with their habits, Should be completely abandoned, Or by truly seeing the dependent arising, Or by truly seeing the Four Noble Truths, And by familiarizing oneself with the emptiness of the aggregates, And by abandoning through meditating on benefiting beings. Having abandoned this aggregate, those who take rebirth elsewhere, The self apart from the aggregates, Does not go to the path of existence. The doer and the deeds, And the enjoyment of their results, and permanence, That is the doer, the eater, Devoid of the ability to act. The aggregates are not self, the self does not have aggregates, The aggregates are not mine, the self also Does not abide in the aggregates. That which is completely imputed by others, Because it is imputed, it should not be self. The aggregates have no connection with the self, Because they are contradictory. A form that is the same before and after, How can it be connected with impermanence? But if it is connected, then permanence also Becomes the nature of impermanence, Impermanence also becomes the nature of permanence, Because they are always connected. Thus, the glorious noble one, Said by the feet of Nagarjuna, The self that is imputed by the non-Buddhists, If analyzed well with reason, Within all the aggregates, From nowhere can it be found, The aggregates exist, but they are not permanent, That is also not the nature of self. Whatever is permanent and impermanent, Is not the nature of the support and the supported, Only the aggregates.
