Then, O Protector of Light (འོད་སྲུངས།), in a future time, in the last five hundred years of the degenerate age, some sons and daughters of good family of the Bodhisattva Vehicle will be unskilled in means, greedy, and overcome by desire. They will think that by making offerings to cloth images, paintings on walls, or other images of the Tathagata, they will attain accomplishments and miraculous powers. They will also become arrogant, thinking, 'We are making offerings to the Tathagata, not to others.' They will praise themselves and disparage others with that small amount of virtue, and they will also think that they can make a living by it. O Protector of Light (འོད་སྲུངས།), at that time, those who have images of the Tathagata made, gather together, and otherwise make various offerings to the Tathagata will not seek such teachings. They will not recite, meditate, or cherish inner concentration. At that time, householders and renunciants will become skilled in offerings, painting, knowledge, and complete understanding, and they will also obtain robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine for the sick, and utensils by this means. O Protector of Light (འོད་སྲུངས།), I have taught that those of the Bodhisattva Vehicle should act in this way: abide in the heap of morality and seek vast learning. However, at that time, they will only abide in broken morality, abandon the search for the Dharma, strive to make offerings to the stupas of the Tathagata, and expect to make a living by this means. Thus it was said. Also in the Sutra of the King of the Arising of All Dharmas: Shariputra, therefore, A son or daughter of good family who wishes to repay that unsurpassed kindness should generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Shariputra, one should regard this as the unsurpassed repayment, and how one benefits others is how one repays the kindness of others. Incomparable beings, without compare

If one wishes to repay all sentient beings, one should generate an incomparable bodhicitta. This is the unsurpassed generation of mind. Shariputra, if one wishes to repay the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, one should generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Shariputra, if one wishes to repay the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the future, one should also generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Shariputra, if one wishes to repay the kindness of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who are now residing in the ten directions, living and abiding, in an unsurpassed way, one should also generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Shariputra, these two persons are those who worship the Tathagata with unsurpassed worship. Which two persons? Those who exhaust all defilements, and those who generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Then, at that time, the Bhagavan spoke these verses: These two persons of the teaching, worship the Tathagata, bodhicitta and arhat, these are precisely these two persons. Whoever in that lifetime, has been well respected, such material offerings, do not exist in the three realms of the world. Whoever offers the forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches of gods and humans, to those great beings, it cannot be said that they have made the slightest contribution. Whoever generates this vast mind, which is the cause of enlightenment, this offering without material, is praised by the unsurpassed wise ones. The world with the gods, and likewise the world with the maras, offering all the desires that exist in them, it cannot be said that they have made the slightest contribution. Thus it was said. Showing the intention to uphold the holy Dharma. Also, in the Sutra of the Cloud of Jewels: Sons of good family, if you possess ten qualities, you are bodhisattvas who uphold the holy Dharma. What are the ten? They are: In the later times, in the later ages, in the final five hundred years, when the holy Dharma is completely destroyed and the teachings are confused, and sentient beings enter the wrong path, and the light of wisdom

When the lamp is extinguished and the teacher is absent, one should uphold, read, recite, and fully understand the vast, meaningful, and powerful sutras, which are like the mother of all sacred teachings. One should also speak of them to others, teach them, truly reveal them, and clarify them. One should rejoice in those who have entered into them, have faith and admiration, and benefit them. One should listen to the sacred teachings with a mind free from defilement, regard the speakers of the Dharma as teachers, regard the sacred teachings as nectar, generate the thought of taking essence, generate the thought of oil, and seek the sacred teachings without regard for body or life. Having sought them, one should also diligently practice them. Son of good family, if one possesses these ten qualities, then one is a Bodhisattva who upholds the sacred teachings, so it is said. In the Sutra Requested by Ocean of Wisdom, it is also said: Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva named King of Qualities Light, having gathered in that same assembly, sat down and asked the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, the Dharma that you have fully awakened to is inexpressible, so if the Dharma is inexpressible, how should one uphold the sacred Dharma? The Bhagavan replied: Son of good family, it is just so, as you have said, the Dharma that I have fully awakened to is inexpressible. Son of good family, however, whatever letters of definitive terms that express the inexpressible, unconditioned Dharma, those letters of definitive terms that are designated, whether they are received, upheld, taught, made to understand, established, explained, distinguished, clarified, or truly revealed, this is called upholding the sacred Dharma. Son of good family, furthermore, whatever Dharma speakers uphold, teach, and practice such sutras as these, one should be close to, rely on, respectfully serve, attend to, respect, and...
