And fully filled with ga, incense, powder, and spices, even if one were to offer to the Tathagata three times a day and three times at night for millions of years for the purpose of making offerings, it would not be as great as a Bodhisattva who is frightened and afraid of the talk of commotion, and all the three realms are frightened. When manifestly accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings, one manifestly inclines towards solitary places, and whoever abandons seven steps, that one will generate even more merit. Furthermore, in the same sutra, it says: "Sons of good family, a Bodhisattva who possesses four qualities does not rejoice in giving, nor does he become miserly, nor does he have a mind of clinging, and even if he sees others giving worldly possessions, he does not rejoice in that. Wherever, like this, the unsurpassed abode of the Buddha will be attained, he will possess patience towards the profound, and he will also perfect unsurpassed wisdom. What are the four? Sons of good family, here, the Bodhisattva seeks to hear much, and when he has become learned, he enters villages, cities, towns, royal palaces, and regions, and gives the gift of Dharma, without any expectation of even a slight 'good' in return. He teaches the Dharma to others with a mind free from attachment, and because he possesses a mind free from attachment, like this, this gift of Dharma is praised and extolled by the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and therefore, he experiences joy, thinking it is supreme. He correctly sees that he abides in the supreme gift, the lord of giving, and therefore experiences joy, and he does not rejoice in others who are diligently engaged in completely abandoning the worldly possessions of sentient beings. Why is that? Sons of good family, whatever Bodhisattva, in the immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable realms of the ten directions, as many Tathagatas as there are, surrounded by the Sangha of monks, abide, living and existing, to all those

Whatever the extent of the world, whatever is a complete and flawless offering, and a Bodhisattva's superior and perfect aspiration, possessing discipline, possessing virtuous qualities, another with great compassion universally arising, remembering the Buddha Bhagavan, with an undefiled mind not desiring gain, respect, and fame, merely for one sentient being proclaiming a single four-line verse, and after reciting that verse, with the equality of letters, thoroughly realizing, for example, these letters are empty of inherent existence, likewise all dharmas are also empty of inherent existence. Sons of good family, for that accumulation of merit, the previous accumulation of merit does not even approach one hundredth, one thousandth, one millionth, one hundred millionth, one hundred million hundredth, one hundred million thousandth, one hundred million millionth, even up to one hundred million trillion millionth, number, count, metaphor, and approximate measure, even the cause cannot approach. After saying this, the two monks Dharma and Dharma Good said this: Friends, therefore you should not cling to me, for that is equivalent to making offerings. Because for those who perceive as Buddha, even the Buddha is not seen, what need is there to mention the act of offering? That is nowhere to be found. Furthermore, those who wish to make offerings to the Tathagata should offer themselves. The monks and gods said this: How should those who wish to make offerings to the Tathagata offer themselves? The two monks Dharma and Dharma Good said: Friends, just as the offering to the Tathagata Arhat Perfectly Awakened One, by making oneself a worthy object of offering for all sentient beings, likewise one should offer oneself. As the Tathagata has taught, so should one learn, and after learning, one should not be arrogant or complacent. One should thoroughly distinguish the Dharma, and after thoroughly distinguishing, one should not contemplate any Dharma, when you thus offer yourselves,

When that is done, the Tathagata will also be worshiped, and you yourselves will become worthy of worship. Those who wish to worship the relics of the Tathagata should worship themselves, and worship in the same way that the Tathagata worshiped himself, and those qualities of the relics of the Tathagata that are pleasing to worship should be accomplished by oneself, so that the Tathagata will be worshiped. Whoever does not generate concepts and signs, that is the worship of the Tathagata. Whoever does not conceive of self, and does not discriminate, that is the worship of the Tathagata. Whoever does not go to the other world, does not come to this world, whoever does not abide on this shore, nor abide on the other shore, that is the worship of the Tathagata.
