One should generate the thought. Son of good family, you should generate the thought of an excellent son towards me. Towards the virtuous friend, generate the thought of parents; towards the subsequent teachings, generate the thought of the principles of lineage; towards diligence, generate the thought of not losing the principles. Son of good family, you should generate the thought of a young king towards me. Towards the virtuous friend, generate the thought of the king of Dharma; the thought of an excellent minister; towards the instructions, generate the thought of the king's laws; towards diligence, generate the thought of the crown of the king of wisdom; binding the means of adornment and Dharma on the head, and the thought of gazing upon the city of the king of Dharma. Son of good family, you should cultivate such thoughts and attend to virtuous friends. Thus it was said. Also in the Sutra of Universally Wandering Bodhi: Great King, with ten places, with friends, towards virtuous friends, one should know to cherish love, desire benefit, desire welfare, and desire happiness. What are the ten? That is, remembering that he dwells for a long time, rejoicing when he comes, going forth to greet him because of his good arrival, speaking auspicious words to him, speaking secrets to him, hiding his secrets, guarding his secrets, abandoning those who are not friendly to him, and relying on those who are friendly to him. Great King, these ten places are those who go forward to prevent evil. Great King, also with ten places, with friends, towards virtuous friends, one should know to cherish love, desire benefit, desire welfare, and desire happiness. What are the ten? Causing them to properly take up the discipline of body, speech, and mind. Placing, placing well, causing them to truly enter into abandoning what should be abandoned. Dwelling with reverence towards father and mother, listening with reverence, and so forth, causing them to truly enter into those who make images, having no malice towards the monks and Brahmins who possess morality, causing them to truly take up going forward, and praising and proclaiming the qualities of those.
