Because of accomplishing great benefit, like a father. The virtuous friend is like a mother because he protects from all sins. The virtuous friend is like a teacher because he makes one understand the bodhisattva's training. The virtuous friend is like a guide because he leads one onto the path of the perfections. The virtuous friend is like a doctor because he liberates one from the disease of afflictions. The virtuous friend is like a snow mountain because he makes the medicine of wisdom grow. The virtuous friend is like a hero because he protects from all fears. The virtuous friend is like a ferryman because he saves one from the great river of samsara. The virtuous friend is like a helmsman because he leads one to the precious island of all-knowing wisdom. Son of good family, therefore, because of constantly keeping this in mind without interruption, you should rely on a virtuous friend. Because of entrusting all burdens and not being weary, have a mind like the earth; because of being inseparable, have a mind like a vajra; because of not being moved by all suffering, have a mind like an iron fence; because of listening to instructions as one pleases, have a mind like a servant; because of not breaking any vows, have a mind like a disciple; because of not despising the undertaking of all actions, have a mind like a worldly slave; because of not being weary of all afflictions, have a mind like a mother; because of conforming to all that should be done, have a mind like a hired hand; because of abandoning pride and arrogance, have a mind like a broom; because of changing from high to low at all times, have a mind like a full moon; because of completely abandoning all that is unruly, have a mind like a good horse; because of entrusting heavy burdens, have a mind like a vehicle; because of the thought of taming and being good, have a mind like an elephant; because of not moving or shaking, have a mind like a mountain; because of not being angry, have a mind like a dog; because of not being conceited or arrogant, have a mind like an outcaste; because of not having any pride, have a mind like a bull with its horns cut off; because of not being complacent, have a mind like an armpit; because of not being weary of going and coming, have a mind like a boat; because of accomplishing the ultimate in the virtuous friend's speech, have a mind like a bridge

Generate the perception of the virtuous teacher as a doctor, the perception of the instructions as medicine, and the perception of diligently practicing as nursing the illness. Son of lineage, you should generate the perception of me as a guest. Generate the perception of the virtuous teacher as pointing out the path, the perception of the instructions as the path, and the perception of diligent practice as going smoothly on the path. Son of lineage, you should generate the perception of me as going to the other shore. Generate the perception of the virtuous teacher as a boatman, the perception of following the teachings as a ferry, and the perception of diligent practice as a boat. Son of lineage, you should generate the perception of me as a farmer. Generate the perception of the virtuous teacher as the king of nagas, the perception of the instructions as rain, and the perception of diligent practice as the ripening of crops. Son of lineage, you should generate the perception of me as a poor person. Generate the perception of the virtuous teacher as rest, the perception of the instructions as wealth and benefit, and the perception of diligent practice as eliminating poverty. Son of lineage, you should generate the perception of me as a student. Generate the perception of the virtuous teacher as a teacher, the perception of the instructions as craftsmanship, and the perception of diligent practice as mastering craftsmanship. Son of lineage, you should generate the perception of me as fear. Generate the perception of the virtuous teacher as a hero, the perception of the instructions as weapons, and the perception of diligent practice as defeating enemies. Son of lineage, you should generate the perception of me as a merchant. Generate the perception of the virtuous teacher as holding the rudder, the perception of the instructions as jewels, and the perception of diligent practice as collecting jewels.
