It should be known that all virtuous spiritual friends are complete. Abiding in the precepts of the Bodhisattva vows and not degenerating, without any transgressions, therefore abiding in discipline. Not being dull-witted, therefore being learned. Having obtained any virtue arising from meditation, and having attained tranquility and insight, therefore possessing realization. Possessing compassion, therefore being loving, at this time he will put aside his own happiness and dedicate himself to the benefit of others. When he teaches the Dharma to others, because he is not shaken by the fear of timidity, he does not lose mindfulness and courage, therefore being fearless. Able to endure all the contempt, ridicule, belittlement, slander, and harsh words of others, as well as the various wrongdoings of sentient beings. When teaching the Dharma to the fourfold assembly, possessing strength and being diligent, therefore the mind will not feel weary. Words do not deviate from the Dharma, being clear and possessing the power of words, therefore possessing virtuous words. Thus, the virtuous spiritual friend of a Bodhisattva, complete with all aspects of such qualities, makes the actions of a virtuous spiritual friend meaningful in five ways: that is, from the beginning, wishing to benefit and bring happiness to others. And also truly knowing benefit and happiness as they are. To this, wisdom will not be confused or inverted. With whatever method and whatever way of teaching the Dharma one is able to subdue sentient beings, to this one has the ability and power, and the mind will not feel weary. There is no partiality towards all sentient beings, whether inferior, intermediate, or superior, because his compassion is equal. Thus, the virtuous spiritual friend abides in the basis of faith in five ways: because merely hearing his words, others will have great respect for him, what need is there to mention seeing him in person? Behavior is extremely peaceful, and possessing dignity, all limbs and parts do not change, therefore being complete in conduct. The actions of body, speech, and mind do not have roughness or change, therefore being stable. Because one does not act falsely towards others, one is able to discern conduct and stability.

Because one does not pretend in that way, there is no artificiality. Regarding the Dharma talks of others, or because of gain and respect, one does not generate jealousy, but when others give Dharma talks, I request them, and even if I obtain great gain and respect, I am not shaken, and with a joyful mind, I allow others to request, and I also bestow that Dharma talk and gain and respect upon others, just as I am satisfied by gain and respect, others are also extremely satisfied by gain and respect, so there is no jealousy. Reducing vessels and utensils, and completely giving away all the offerings received, this is reducing utensils. A Bodhisattva who has become a virtuous friend performs the actions of a virtuous friend for others by taming them in five ways: causing them to increase, causing them to remember, causing them to measure, causing them to follow instructions, and teaching the Dharma. The detailed explanations of those words are as follows: A Shravaka should understand karma. Instructions and following instructions are even more excellent than that, as follows: one should understand from the chapter on the kinds of power. Relying on a virtuous friend, a Bodhisattva should fully understand in four ways: at all times, attending to the sick and performing ordinary service, having love and respect, and joy, at all times speaking respectfully, prostrating, rising to greet, folding hands, treating with reverence, making offerings, offering clothes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine for the sick, and utensils that are in accordance with the Dharma, properly arranging a place to stay, and arranging in various ways, thereby having autonomy over matters that are in accordance with the Dharma, being unmoving, abiding as it is, going to understand the thoughts of others at all times, and serving, asking, and listening. A Bodhisattva who wishes to hear the Dharma from a virtuous friend should listen to the Dharma with five kinds of perception: because it is rare, having the perception of a jewel, and being born together
